Hi Helliborous

Although magnesium deficiency is an indicator of low stomach acid it is actually an alkaline which if you supplement with it it will act to neutralize stomach acid or raise pH. Case in point Magnesium is used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. Milk if Magnesia (magnesium) is an OTC treatment for the same.

I have taken it sporadically in the past to treat constipation. But I'm achlorhydric so I try and steer clear of it. You can have your magnesium levels check with blood or urine test.

It is confusing and I'm not expert on Magnesium but these are just my thoughts. Quite frightening huh! 🤪

Thanks Rexz, yes reflux meds came to mind when I considered supplementing so my concern was the alkaline effect, not good with low stomach acid. I'll arrange a test and in the meantime up foods with magnesium. Regards

Or possibly try topically applied magnesium oil? I'm not sure how well absorbed it is though...

Hi Myoldcat, I do sometimes use magnesium cream for restless legs but will start to make it part of a routine, thank you

Apple cider vinegar and lemon juice ar also alkaline, but they do help with low stomach acid. Mag always gives me GI issues, so Idk about that.

both vinegar (containing acetic acid) and lemon juice (containing acetic acid) are acidic, not alkaline.

ACV (not other vinegars) and lemon juice turn alkaline when you ingest it. Both will work to increase stomach acid. But for metabolism, they are good to alkalinise your body.

I must admit that prior to reading your post I hadn't even thought about the effects of taking magnesium with low stomach acid..😳 But if course it's a known antacid! So thank you for raising the issue, and I'll be checking out the topical route myself.
