Magnesium supplements

Has anyone used either Magnesium Chloride (which I understand you can get in a powder), or a magnesium chloride spray?

Are they as effective as capsules. I wonder if these might work better for me than the Malate or glyncate due to my low stomach acid.

I have the chloride form in bath salts, over on the thyroid forum it’s not recommended for internal use. I think it might rip though you so to speak. (It would me, I have Hashi’s and a very sensitive digestion)

Citrate good for those with constipation.

Biglycinate better for those on the loose side.

I can’t tolerate much of either and am convinced some of the glycinate I’ve purchased are incorrectly labelled. This one seems to suit me though. I take Betain HCL with meals to boost stomach acid.

Thanks. I’ve been on Malate and glycinate, but getting loose bowel, so thinking about trying a different one. I’ve been told some people can’t tolerate glycinate. I take Betaine HCl too.

Hmm did you try the creams? Oil sprays or bath salts? I find the oils sting a bit but the Better You cream was OK. Bath salts suit me best.

Yes I struggle with most of them but this new one I sent the photo seems gentler somehow 🤷🏽‍♀️

Unfortunately this has magnesium oxide in it, which is not a good one. But thanks.

Sorry what has magnesium oxide? Do you mean the one in my photo? Here are the ingredients. No oxide here.

You got me all curious… a few Google searches later, most sites say magnesium oxide is used to reduce stomach acid, is poorly absorbed and is routinely used as a short term laxative. Here is an example of one of the links Google gave me medlineplus.gov/druginfo/me...

I must have googled the wrong one. Sorry

You got me down a right rabbit hole this evening, lots of online references to Magnesium Chloride being good for low stomach acid. Worth a try maybe 🤷🏽‍♀️

There are several magnesium compounds: glycinate, oxide, citrate, malate, and sulphate, as well as the chloride.

Magnesium chloride is the most bioavailable one (most potent) and the only one that works for me.

It's possibly worth a try but be aware that if you are getting loose stools it is a sign that you probably have plenty of mag and don't need any more.

Well done for finding a source of it - it's not that easy to obtain. Go easy with it, especially to start with, as it is much more effective than the others and so you can easily get to toxic levels (hence why it's not readily available).

I'm definitely not recommending you eat the foot-soak flakes as they are not quality controlled for human consumption, but confess that's what I take.

I'm also wondering why you think you need more?

What are your other symptoms?

Could it be that you are getting looser stools because you are absorbing enough magnesium, but actually need something else to relieve your symptoms?

If you do need as much, or more, magnesium, taking more small doses throughout the day will help.

Be aware that it is toxic in excess, hence why it has a laxative effect - to get rid of it from your body quickly, if your body thinks it has too much.

I’m going to to that. I have a Malate which is 75 elemental per capsule. So going to try that 3 - 4 times a day. I’m waiting on a hair analysis test result which hopefully will show how much cellular magnesium I have. Symptoms apart from loose bowel, are weakness, low appetite, and no energy.

I’m still wondering if it is all to do with low stomach acid still, so not absorbing. I did stop PPIs last December but don’t know how long it takes for acid levels to return to normal. I’m taking Betaine HCl, but maybe not enough.

I use a magnesium chloride spray from Harrogate Organics. It really helps my sleep, but not sure how much is absorbed by the body compared to tablets.

I’ve looked at that one and may try it.

Scientist, not medic.

Magnesium Chloride = 'Epsom Salts'. Take care with this stuff. Too much and you will appreciate what folks refer to when refer to the 'eye of a needle' when they visit the smallest room.

Magnesium Sulphate is Epsom salts!

Magnesium Chloride is sometimes referred to as Magnesium oil.
