switching/alternating Hydroxocobalamin and cyanocobalamin?

excuse my ignorance but I thought I’d check with those that know before I blindly go doing something silly.

I was reading the NHS B12 pages and saw they only offer hydroxcobalamin and they suggest this lasts longer. So I’ve ordered some Pascoe to try.

I have stock of cyanocobalamin and use that twice to 3 times a week. can I just switch?

Can I alternate?

Any tips?

I notice Pascoe is more volume, does that make a difference?

My symptoms are tingling numbness pins and needles in arms, balance, anxiety, concentration, memory, oh and poor digestion/elimination. These dissipate when I inject EOD or E2D.

Thanks🌱

It’s fine to alternate between Hydroxocobalamin and Cynocobalamin. It’s Hevert that has more volume ( 1mg x 2ml) ampoule

Pascoe Hydroxocobalamin B12 depot is 1.5mg x 1ml

Pasco makes a 1mg x 1ml Cynocobalamin B12 ampoule .

I’ll send you an information sheet that I’ve compiled .

Best wishes .

Hello. I have been self-injecting on a daily basis for about 3 years now. Before that I injected every other day for a couple of years. I use both hydroxycobalamin (Pascoe) and cyanocobalamin. I alternate between the two, so one day hydro, the next cyano. Reason for this is that I spend much of my time in Eastern Europe, including Ukraine and Russia, where hydroxycobalamin is not available but cyano is obtainable without prescription, as well as being extraordinarily cheap… So I always order 100 ampules of hydroxycobalamin from Germany when I am home in Ireland and eke it out with cyano. Works well for me - symptoms are pretty much under control. Good luck to you!

Due to the shortage of hydroxocobalamin in the USA, I started alternating it with Cyano. I inject twice daily and I would use hydro in the AM and cyano in the PM. No real issue that I can tell. I order the 1500 mcg hydro from Pascoe, but my local Walgreens has gotten stock back and I am going to pick up my 6, 30ml vials of hydro today so I will be switching back to all hydro.

Thanks, this is helpful . Sorry to hear about your supply issues that sounds rough. Glad you have something sorted. Do you notice any difference between the types cyano x hydroxy? Sounds like you have a preference. Just curious. Had my first hyroxy IM SI this morning and calf muscle knot melted away in minutes …. Not sure if that was a coincidence 🤣

I am in the US and have had a prescription for cyanocobalamin for every day self injection. I would like to switch to hydroxocobalamin. My pharmacist can't get hydroxocobalamin in 1000mcg ampules, only in 30ml bottles. I was interested to see you use those 30ml bottles. Do you have problems with the reusable 30ml bottles, or concerns about sanitation?

I use the 30ml vials and have for a long time. As long as you follow good aseptic techniques there should be no problems. CDC says vials are good for 28 days, but when I was doing daily I used them for 30 days. Now with twice daily, they are used up in 15. Always swab the top vigorously with alcohol, use one needle to draw the dose and a fresh one to inject. (dull needles hurt more) Before removing the needle cap, draw back 1 ml of air, then remove the needle cap and inject the air into the vial before drawing the dose to equalize the pressure and make the dose easier to draw. Store the vial in a dark, cool place between uses.

If the hydroxo is not covered by insurance, GoodRx has a pretty good discount with Walgreens. I get 6 vials for about $90, or singles are $28, but it depends on location and pharmacy. Good luck, I hope it works better for you.

I saw more improvement with hydroxy compared to when I first started with cyano.

how are you doing now? Is your numbness thing getting any better?

Numbness returns after 4 days on hydroxocobalamin SCSI. But depends on life, exercise, stress. I can definitely go a week if life is zen and relaxing 🧘‍♀️

I take methylcobalamin and Methylfolate oral supplements too.
