Hi, can anyone offer any ideas as to why ferritin has jumped from 37(mid-June) to 85.4 this wk aside from infection please?

Hi

Wonder if I can pick your brains again please?

My ferritin was 48 prior to loading dose March/April, then lowered to 37 which I understand is normal thing to happen on the 8wk check.

I’ve just completed a yearly pinprick test(I know maybe not as reliable, but sale on &needs must!) and ferritin has whooped up to 85.4! in 6 wks!

I’ve only been able to take one iron tablet a day, ferrous fumerate 210mg (65mgiron) due to stomach issues and have been waiting for Three Arrows to arrive, & have been off them 1wk before test. It usually takes a very long time for ferritin to rise.

Appreciate infections can affect this, but no obvious signs and CRP normal. Have an iron panel to try nxtbwk to try, but wondering if anyone has any other ideas about what could be happening please?

I assumed ferritin would have maybe been even lower for a while whilst the b12 makes use of it? Haemoglobin in range and MCH overrange, have asked for that to be rechecked now it’s 4 months since loading dose-awaiting Drs thoughts on that!

Many thanks…

Hi, normally I'd ne pleased with a ferritin level of that, but rising 50 in 6 wks doesn't seem right! What has your folate risen from/to & what are you taking? I've heard of the good folk on here talk of folate trapping if levels are higher, have you?

No I haven't. It's a complicated business. I haven't been taking supp and it's 7 ug/L. >2.90!!!

Ah right. I know very little abt folate, mine shot up higher once, just abve range after starting b12 inj,but then went bk to its usual 7.5,but think we're talking abt diff ranges! And never did know why it did it.That does seem high, have u started a post asking why? Am sure plenty will be able to help...and yes,it's all a complicated business!

Have just googled. It mentions hemolysis of the sample cld give a falsely high level? Have u had more than one test reporting it as high? or could it be an error?

oh you've hit out on the head there that was a NHS result so I paid for a medical check test I'm believe it or not they can't do the folate sample due to too many red cells and the way the blood was taken. I have a huge bruise because the young lady was learning, so yes I think it's to do with that possibly I'm trying to get a retest from and they're saying they'll just give me £5 towards it so I'm fighting because I'll tell you what I paid a lot of money for this thyroid panel and I don't see that I should be the victim here it was the nominated clinic that they use and I think it's between them? 😊

Oh dear! Well surely if its down to the way it was taken you're well within your rights to demand a retest! Yes it is a lot of money & yes,you keep going until you get what you deserve! We know everyone has to learn but it doesn't sound a good experience,it takes a lot of our time & effort to get these tests done & if mistakes happen they need to be fairly rectified!

£5 is not going to go far towards another one is it!

They seem to struggle on these pinprick to get folate results, but the company I used did at least warn that and gave £8 refund & it wasn't a result I was looking for anyway.

Good luck and hope yr next test comes bk lower.

Yes,sorry I meant to add they struggle on pinprick to get a result for folate, but not usually venous like you had! Heats getting to me!, well thats one excuse anyway:)

lol. Def to do with difficulty wi Ty folate yes venous it had a name, but if blood taken wrong the red cells mask folate. Iv a big bruise

As you're intending to take heme iron perhaps wait and see how you feel in three months. I'm aiming for ferritin to be 100 with PA. Monitor your iron by asking for 3 monthly bloods

Thank you...When the heme iron arrives I'll start it, then if I'm allowed a 3mnthly chk with Drs about a month after I'll be entitled to a test so can make sure I haven't got too much.Yes thank you, I try to kp it nearer 100 too Many thanks...

Was your initial ferritin test with a GP and your pinprick test with a private provider? I and others have noticed a much higher result from private tests than with GPs for ferritin.

Thank you. It just seems a lot to be over, but if you and others have noticed then maybe its a fault?Yes, I'd had two with my Drs, 48, then 37 after loading dose. I was just doing yearly private thyroid check so it happens to test ferritin & was surprised to see such a raise. I'll ask Dr for a ferritin test once 3mnths around, but he didn't mention it was 37 anyway, but I had expkained i need it to be between 80-100 to normally feel better like most & requested an iron panel, but as usual that's a no go! It's been down to 11 before & noones been interested, as most if us find!

I've contacted private tester & they're looking into it? .Many thanks...
