Daily Magnesium intake?

I'm curious to hear about others Magnesium daily intake and experience of taking it.

It was one of the first pieces of advise somebody anecdotally told me when I was diagnosed with PA B12D nearly three years ago. I have not taken any but I think I'm about to start and have ordered some magnesium bisglycinate. (I also supplement with Methylfolate and Vit D in winter months).

What time of day do you take it and in what quantities?

Do you find it helpful for a particular reason or symptom, or do you take it just to ensure general good levels are maintained?

Does anybody know why Magnesium is so important with B12 Deficiency?

Lots of people talk about it and from searching this forum lots of people take it.. but I cannot find 'why'.

If anybody has any links to specific papers relating to this I would be very interested as I can't seem to locate anything.

882 mg from food. If your diet is poor in Magnesium and/or there is some absorption issue, it can make sense to supplement. Rather than being important specifically for B12, Magnesium is important for good health in a wider sense.

"Magnesium plays a role in bone mineralization, ezymatic reactions, oxidative phosphorylation, nucleic acid synthesis, platelet activity, hormone receptor binding and signal transmission, cell membrane ion transfer and calcium regulation."

^ from the textbook, "Advanced Nutrition and Human Metabolism" (Gropper/Smith/Carr)

I think lots of people take it because magnesium supplementation is heavily pushed on social media, its very hard to cause harm from taking too much and many poorly planned diets will be too low in Magnesium (but this is unlikely if you're following a generally healthy dietary pattern).

I take magnesium glycinate every night. I don't take it as part of my B12 deficiency regime per se. I did start taking it for this reason as, like you, someone suggested it to me early on in my diagnosis. However, I soon realised that it was a massive help for my 'night time antics'. And by that I mean my bad dreams, my talking, shouting, and screaming in my sleep, my making noises like a foghorn in my sleep, my punching and kicking in my sleep, my running in my sleep. My poor husband lol. But magnesium calmed all of this right down. I did a trial where I stopped taking it and all the sleep issues returned. Now I take one tablet per night and this really helps with all the sleep issues I had. I never had insomnia, or struggled to sleep, but I was very vocal, and active, in my sleep, sometimes even having night terrors. Magnesium supplementation has stopped this.

I take magnesium citrate 600mg each night for migraine prophylaxis (no idea if it works, but it's not doing me any harm).

I take magnesium glycinate 400mg with vitamin D and B6 added every night. I don’t really notice any difference. I was hoping to sleep better.

I feel like I take a ton of magnesium and I still can’t sleep. 😭 I’ve been told by a neurologist to take between 400mg to 600mg daily for migraine prevention. Due to the size of tablets I either take around 280mg magnesium malate on vitamin D days (as I think magnesium is a cofactor or D) or 225mg mixed magnesium with zinc in the morning, and 240mg magnesium glycinate in the evening. I missed a morning dose recently and have had a terrible migraine so presumably it’s doing something.
