I ran across an article that was interesting, if for no other reason, for its quite detailed description of B12 deficiency. Scroll down to the heading, "Vitamin B12 levels and MND/ALS".

ALS and B12
Hi WiscGuy,
Not seen you on here for a while.
Interesting artical but quite an old one which dates back to 2010.
Thanks for posting.
Thank you for postingMy mother had motor neuron disease.
I have b12 deficiency unexplained, MGUS, hypocellular marrow and Vitamin D issue. All mentioned in article!!
This article says treatment with b12 injection doesn't stop disease but I have to wonder how much "treatment" was given and if given earlier, would development of MND have been prevented or delayed.
The MGUS discovery and subsequent hypocellular marrow made me give up the fight for more b12 from NHS and start self- injecting
May be considered quite old -but nonetheless complex and interesting.
[Anyone here identify with that ?]
The symptoms listed here are better explained and more varied than any other I've come across - -outside of those that have been drawn up by support groups of course.
Visible symptoms are listed as well as effects of early and later nerve damage. Tiredness is not first and foremost. An altered sense of smell is there too.
Good find, WiscGuy !
Thank you WiscGuy,
I had a quick scan and have saved. Although dated 2010, it does not matter as it is presented as a Case Study. So, with this in mind, I feel it is important that the Community understands some of the types of Articles in Medical journals.
So :-
1. Research can have an Experimental Design where you manipulate 1 factor. An example would be to compare a group of subjects who took 100 mg of Methylcobalamin daily for a month with a Control Group who took a Placebo for a month.
2. A Correlation Design so looking at a few or a couple of variables usually via observation. An example is those with Parkinson’s type of symptoms does increasing activity help or hinder mobility and mood.
3. A Descriptive Design so through interviews, surveys and observations, Qualitative Data is obtained. So, you ask people and carers about their experiences of their particular disease(s). How it impacts them as a person. This is where WiscGuy’s literature fits in. It is a Case Study.
Can it be replicated ? No, because it is individual to a particular 78 year old man Caucasian man, I will call him Fred, with 3 specific diseases. However, there will be similar Case Studies and this Case Study has 30 references.
One of which dates to 1959 which is Classic Literature. So, Fred’s diseases, signs, symptoms and experience is extremely relevant. As is Every Person’s on here.
4. Diagnostic Design so looking for Cause and Effect. How using hypotheses and methodically testing for each one. Seeing how ‘entity’ responds. Please note that I am not referring to you as that.
Say, I wanted to debug a Computer Program that is not working. Then it is right, it could be this bit here ? Nope. What about this ? Nope. Hmm, this bit ? Yay, phew.
I started life as Mathematician, so play with numbers. FlipperTD is our resident Scientist, they may wish to add.
