My symptoms of b12 deficiency started approximately 5 years ago.
I started b12 injections (hydro) 3 months ago. During that time my homocysteine was over 18. My level decreased too < 8. However I still have many symptoms of b12 deficiency.
- neurological symptoms
- shortness of breath / coughing / asthma
- brain fog, anxiety & low concentration
- intolerance to alcohol, due to high histamine blood levels
I also take the following:
- vitamin d
- methylfolate
- iron
- b6
Are the b12 deficiency symptoms in combination with the lower homocysteine common?
Thanks in advance!

B12 deficiency causes high levels of Homocysteine ( but there are other causes) You have only had injections for 3 months , so I think that you need to be patient . There is no way of knowing how long it will take to get rid of your symptoms. As they started 5 years ago , they might take some time . I know that sounds irritatingly vague , but we are all different . . ..
Some patients need more injections than others . Are you on the bog-standard 12 weekly ? Did you have 6 loading injections over 2 weeks ? Your Homocysteine is at a healthy level now , which is great . Best wishes .
What are your iron levels? The shortness of breath suggests this might still be low. You also may need to get your iron as haem iron directly from frequent meals of meat and fish until your system has had a chance to mend.
what does of B6 are you taking - high doses over a long period of time have been associated with neurotoxicity.
To be honest 3 months is a relatively short period - some people don't notice much for 6 months.
Have you kept a diary of symptoms in relation to timing of injections - it could also be that weekly just isn't enough for you. Some of us do require B12 more frequently.
