Cyanocobalamin expiry date?

Hi everyone — because I’m switching doctors in the U.S. due to a local move (1 hour away), I have a three-month prescription of cyanocobalamin to get me through until I find a new PCP. My question is: how long does cyanocobalamin last? It’s kind of reassuring to me to have these doses, so ideally I think I’d like to make the trip for the injections while keeping the cyano. in reserve in case something goes wrong and my new PCP won’t prescribe the B12. Thanks so much!

Hi still_elsewhere Cynaocobamalon injections are usually injected every four weeks.

If it is any reassurance I passed fifty years of using them on the 10th May and I'm still "clivealive" at the age of 81

Clivealive — always reassuring to hear! It sounds like you were diagnosed in your early 30s, which is my situation too.

I was more wondering — well, how long can I store this cyanocobalamin if I don’t end up using it? (If I make the trip to get the injections at my old doctor’s office and instead save up the injections for an emergency-type situation?)

There should be an expiry date on the vial - be guided by that. It's normally several months, maybe up to a year long

store away from light - and as Clivealive says there should be an expiry date somewhere on packaging (which includes the glass of any phial. Expiry dates are usually several years from manufacture but this assumes that it has been stored in the right condition - avoiding extreme heat and light.

That’s what I was hoping — thanks so much!

Two years is fir vials, but in case of multidose vial after first puncture is one month. Should be kept between 15 to 30 centigrade away from sunlight. But methylcobalamine vials bshould be kept in black sheet wrap. Cyanocobalamin is the less sensitive to light and heat among other forms.
