What would be the effects of my wife being taken off B12 injections when she has pernicious anaemia, she’s previously had two transfusion and a iron transfusion many thanks in advance.

My question is because she had her b12 injection but had to have bloods done at the same time

It will depend on how long her injections are stopped for. Once you have Pernicious anemia, you have it for life. A few years ago mine were stopped for 3 years and I ended up in hospital for 5 weeks. I'd hate for anyone else to go through what I did

They haven’t stopped yet but with the new government guidance it’s stressful for her

There is no ‘new government advice’ regarding PA.

The British Society of Haematology has issued guidance to GPs that says that B12 treatment should be discussed with the patient.

I believe that this discussion should go something like -

Doctor: I think you can try taking tablets instead of injections.

Patient: No. I want injections.

Doctor: OK.

Your wife’s doctor should know that as she has Pernicious Anaemia, she has to have B12 injections FOR LIFE ,. Also the guide lines for P.A. treatment state that testing B12 levels after injections have begun ,whilst still in receipt of injections , is a waste of time ,and totally unnecessary. They will always be very high . Yes , I know that some GPs do this ,then withdraw injections , saying that the levels are too high . This is totally wrong . Levels are always high and need to be when you are treated for PA.

If your wife’s injections are discontinued , P.A. symptoms will start to return , and her health will decline. If they are withdrawn , you must write a letter saying that you are afraid that her symptoms will return , and you must get them reinstated . A letter is important ,as this must be put on file. Phoning is no use as there will be no record of this .

If your wife starts to feel unwell and the symptoms return , and you still haven no action from the G.P. , you might be forced to self-inject , until you get a positive result . I will send you Information on this . I was forced into self-injections , and my health and well-being have improved dramatically . It is easy and cheap . Best wishes to you and your wife .

My GP is reviewing everyone on B12 jabs and they said even with pernicious anaemia you don’t need to have them every 3 months if your levels are above 300. I still think k that is really low to be hi eat and I kicked up a huge fuss and got myself put down as a special case so I still get mine every 3 months. My b12 dropped as low as 100 when I was being diagnosed with pernicious anaemia. I have now decided to supplement by self injecting as well though. I am topping up to once jab per month.
