I presumed it was thyroid as I have a sticky out nodule but GP said thyroid bloods are in range. 12 months later and feeling worse decided to pay and send bloods to online testing company. Thyroid were fine as GP ssid. Vitamin D, B12 low and serum folate right on the line

Hi I’m recently diagnosed myself with B12 deficiency / Pernicious Anaemia and looks like you may have this too although I have no medical training so you need to speak to your GP as soon as possible. Good luck

Your folate is slightly low. But folate bounces around, depending on how much you’ve recently consumed. Get a supermarket folic acid (400 mcg) and take one a day.

Your vitamin D is low, which isn’t surprising in the UK over the winter. Take a low-dose oral vitamin D supplement.

Your Active B12 is quite low. That can explain why you fell crap. Your doctor will ignore the medichecks result. Go see them and ask for your B12 and MMA to be checked (Methylmalonic acid is a chemical used up in one of the reactions mediated by B12, levels are raised if there’s not enough B12 in your cells).

I’ve got a GP appt beginning April.

I’m on waiting list for gall bladder removal due to gall stones and inflammed gall bladder, I’m wondering it this could be the cause of my low levels

This study

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/243...

suggests serum folate should be >8 microgram/L to prevent significant rise in homocysteine.

6 B12 loading jabs over 2 weeks followed by a jab every 2 or 3 months

A B12 loading jab every other day for as long as symptoms continue to get better then a jab every 2 months

Vital to get adequate treatment as under treatment increases the risk of permanent neurological damage.

Many forum members from UK struggle to get recommended level of treatment if they have neurological symptoms.

Letters to GPs about B12 deficiency

b12deficiency.info/b12-writ...

Point 1 in above link is about under treatment of B12 deficiency with neuro symptoms.

I wrote a very detailed reply on another forum thread with links to B12 books, B12 websites, UK B12 documents/articles plus other B12 info.

Hopefully there will be some useful info in it for you.

"GP said thyroid bloods are in range"

I also suggest posting any thyroid results you have on Thyroid UK forum on HU.

In UK, Gps often only test TSH which won't give a full picture of thyroid function. There are other thyroid tests besides TSH which GP can do.

I learnt from experience to always check all blood results for myself when a GP said everything was normal/in range/no action . I found abnormal and borderline results several times.

Most UK GP surgeries will have online access to at least a summary of test results and records. Some offer complete access to records. If you're in UK your GP surgery website should have details about online access.

If you're not in UK, it's helpful to know which country you are in as treatment patterns vary between countries.

I am not medically trained.
