B12 wearing off too quickly

Hi, I got diagnosed with P.A in May this year, with B12 level of 89. I was feeling terrible - anxiety, palpitations, very self-conscious, tired/drained, trouble sleeping, memory problems, brain fog, leg twitches. (Probably others I'm missing!) Dr put me on loading doses every other day for 2 weeks, and then said every 3 months for life. Also put me on 6 months of folic acid as folate levels were very low (they are now near top end of normal range), and Vit D as that was also low. Folic acid and But D now stopped by Dr.

I had the first the 3 monthly injections but at week 7 symptoms kicked back in, week 8 I saw the Dr and they allowed me to have it at week 9 but said only this time. Also had a blood test the same time (so start of 9th week after injection) and my B12 was only 300. I wanted to know if it should be higher than this given that I am on injections? Also, to argue my case for 2 monthly instead of 3 monthly injections, does anyone know if size makes B12 disappear from the body faster as I am overweight? It seems ridiculous to me that they give everybody the same dosage and timeframe?? Thank you

Ask the doctor to check on the new guidelines in the British National Formulary (BNF) online. Herve recently been changed so that it’s licensed for administration every 2 to 3 months.

Welcome to this group!

Your case is one of thousands, regardless of what size people are. Many of us need much more frequent injections.

Read the replies to posts here for lots of help and then ask any other specific questions you may have.

You should have an injection ‘before’ return of any symptoms although you might not get it from Gp as they go according to practice and can only give 1 in 2 months at best that’s why a lot of people self inject including myself.

I inject every 2 weeks as in week 3 I have return of some symptoms so that’s your body telling you it’s time to inject.

Doctors don’t know much about B12, but injecting before any return of symptoms is usually the correct frequency you should have an injection.

300 is still low as the high end of range is about 900 so your doctor should have given you more frequent injections especially if you’re still having symptoms.
