Vitamin B12 High
Hi CarmenG do you have any idea why your B12 is so high? Are you taking supplements?
Can you give the ranges <from - to> for your test results?
I'm not a medically trained person but there are others on here who will be able to give you some advice if you can give more details.
Firstly, have you supplemented your B12? If you have, then yes, it would be okay. If not, then it needs investigating. Excess B12 is urinated out, but your vitamin D is really low, if the range is similar to my results. I had loading doses of 20,000units twice a week for seven weeks. Mine was 12. Ask your doctor for a prescription.
are you being treated for B12 absorption problems - which includes PA?
If so then having a level over 2000 wouldn't be unusual, but it doesn't mean that you will feel okay.
Hi Gambit, sorry to step in but I was looking for answers to the issue above ↑. I have PA (autoimmune gastritis) and my B12 level was over 2000 while I was fully symptomatic.
I have been trying to figure out why this happens. Do you have any resources that could explain this? (of course I have been researching it but my brain isn't optimal yet).
My doctor seems fine with prescribing injections but I have gotten a bit of opposition from his nurse who seems to have a thing for testing B12 levels.
Have you recently tested folate levels? Low folate can also cause symptoms similar to low B12. It is possible to have normal B12 levels and low folate.
Cobalamin4Life most likely reason is functional B12 deficiency - a response that stops B12 passing from blood to cell when serum B12 is high.
Have you had MMA tested?
My doctor didn't test MMA or homocysteine although the gastroenterologist suggested it. Can MMA still be tested once b12 injections have started?
MMA is measuring what is happening in cells and whether they have enough B12 ... if you have a functional B12 deficiency there is lots of B12 in your blood but something is stopping it getting through to/being used in cells - so it is a test that can be useful in identifying a functional B12 deficiency which may or may not be caused by treatment with B12.
Agree with Gambit62. Sounds like it could be a B12 absorption problem ~ that whatever B12 you intake is just staying in your blood and not being absorbed into muscles, nerves, etc.
