B12 def and weight

I'm curious, does anyone find that B12 deficiency hinders weight loss at all?

Hi JordanC. There have been some posts about this in the past...doesn't seem to affect me, but some people have reported weight gain which may be linked to B12.

Possible weight gain is listed as a potential side effect of some of the patient information leaflets..if you type 'patient information leaflet [insert the name of the cobalamin you use] into Google, the leaflet should pop up and you can see if it's listed for the particular cobalamin you use.

Of course, any weight gain could be completely unrelated, perhaps due to other medication...or simply due to increased appitite due to better health (and wouldn't that be good 😀).

Hope this helps 👍

Before I was treated for PA I felt generally unwell and in particular my stomach discomfort and IBS type symptoms were enough to suppress my appetite. So it was no effort to eat little and my weight stayed low.

Now that I'm on weekly B12, I use betaine HCL and a good quality probiotic I feel better and my stomach / IBS issues are improved. That means I'm more prone to overindulge and put on a pound or two.

I don't think either B12 deficiency nor its treatment makes any magical changes to ones weight. It comes down to that very basic formula....if you eat less calories than you burn you lose weight. If you eat more than you burn then you put on weight.

Before my def was discovered I spent a lot of time on the sofa!!!! That hindered my weight loss......

I'll agree with Pixielula . Not only did my lack of energy mean I didn't exercise as much as before, but I was too knackered in the evening to do anything more than dial a takeaway or stick something in the microwave. Now I'm back to cooking proper meals from scratch - which makes it a lot easier to avoid sugars.

Plus, my mood wasn't right for abstention from anything, especially snacks.

It took me some time to realise that my horrific constipation (that I'd suffered from for years) cleared within a couple of days of getting my jab. It is now one of my markers that I use to starting my supplement between jabs. I don't think that for me it is an accident that I'm finding it so much easier to lose weight now that I've taken control of my B12 and got rid of the constipation!
