Been to the doctors this morn & got last year's blood results.

Went to the doctors this morning to see about bloods, aches, exhaustion ect. So these are the results from last November which the doctor said was normal? He was very understanding but did say that B12 injections are very addictive, as in when you get your injections you feel wonderful for 8 or so wks. So when your feeling like this again after so long we knock it down again & again until it's daily. We all want to feel brilliant every day but that's not the way to go. That I don't agree with but other than he was very nice & is doing a full fasting blood tests including thyroid & vit D. So here are the results, I don't know what I'm looking at so any help would be appreciated.

Haemoglobin estimation........146g/L

! Total white cell count .............10.6 x 10*9/L

Heamatocrit...............................43.3%

Red blood cell count.................44.4 x 10*12L

MCV.............................................97.6 fL

! Mean corpus, haemoglobin....32.9 pg

MCHC............................................337g/L

Red blood cell distribut width....12.4 %

Neutrophil count ..........................5.9 x 10*9/L

! Lymphocyte count'.......................3.5 x 10*9/L

Monocyte count..............................1.0 x10*9/L

Eosinophil Count............................0.10 x 10*9/L

Basophil count.............................0.10 x 10*9/L

Blood heamatinic levels (RWC) normal -no action

Serum vitamin B 12 ......................797 ng/L

Serum Folate...................................4.9 ng/L

These don't mean a thing to me & the ones with exclamation marks are in grey not black ??? So any help would be great X

B12 is NOT addictive. Your doctor is an idiot.

Your doctor maybe nice but he doesn't seem informed at all on B12...

Actually he seems really ignorant - and may not have a clue about addictions... You could tell him (nicely) to check this forum? And go back to study...

Maybe you should at least tell him that people that get the injections are not addicted and if they feel wonderful is because their body works normally

Of course I feel wonderful after the shot - I actually feel NORMAL !

- and when the levels start to go down - for me usually is around week 10 , I start being tired, my vision is blurred... all the usual stuff of B12 deficiency. I have been on jabs for the past 5 years, and never had the need to do it once a month, let alone daily!

Sorry I cannot help on the numbers, as there are no parameters as for what is considered a normal value

PS the serum B12 anyway seems to be in the normal range of 180-914 ng/L

Doctors rarely understand that being B12 DEFICIENT is a neurological condition and not just a vitamin deficiency....sad but true.

Ferritin - Iron - test results maybe ? Ensure he tests thoroughly for the thyroid too and not just the TSH. Tells you very little as it is a pituitary hormone and not a thyroid one :-(

A raised white cell count can sometimes indicate inflammation....

& here's me thinking he was quite nice, I have to say he wasn't my usual doctor as I couldn't get in to see him until the 27th of this month & I just couldn't wait any longer. I've been having the injections every 3 months for 12 yrs now, its been the last 18 months of exhaustion, fogging, sleeplessness, memory getting worse, pain/aching every day, night sweats ect ect ect. But the ball has started rolling so maybe when I can get into Dr walker (my official doc) we can try again or have a good chat. First things first tho bloods tomoz & I will hound you's from there if that's ok :)

Oh I forgot to add that those results I posted above were for November last yr, & I had not long had my injection, don't know if that makes a difference x thyroid & everything taken tomoz X

To be honest, once you are on injections the serum B12 doesn't really mean an awful lot unless it is still coming out low, though in my opinion - and I have to emphasis this is personal rather than medical 797 probably isn't as high as I would expect shortly after an injection and probably indicates that you are one of those mabt who don't retain hydroxo for as long as the text book says.

As others say - GP you saw does seem to be an idiot. There is a huge difference between feeling like a human being and feeling like a zombie. I know it is difficult for someone who hasn't experienced B12D first hand to understand this but it is frustrating that any medic should think it is okay and normal to leave their patients feeling like zombies ... and if it does mean every other day then surely that is cheap compared to the cost of not treating people properly. How many of us have coped by dropping hours etc so paying less by way of taxes .... and probably costing the public sector more in terms of lost income tax and NI than the paltry amount they are saving by mistreating people.
