I adked my GP if I could go on dehydracodeine instead of co codamol. Ive been on co codamol 30//00 for years for chronic pain, with no constipation at all, but since starting the dehydracodeine ive been really constipated. I spoke to my GP and was told that it was because it was a mote concentrated form of codeine . The pain telief is definitely better but this side effect isnt so good. Im trying lactulose to see if that helps. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had a terrible time with constipation when I started talking dihydrocodeine for pancreatic pain. My pancreas already causes me digestive problems so I was already experiencing constipation from time to time so when I started these painkillers it was agony for me even though I had tried taking Senokot and then I tried a powdered laxitive from GP that I can't remember the name of but neither were any good. Three days after I started taking lactulose though I was able to poo and I have done most days now, it's amazing! I take 10ml morning and night but when I'm eating more, especially higher fiber foods I have to take 15ml twice a day. I really hope it will help you because constipation is a horrible and painful thing to have. Good luck with it.

Hi momander

I think from speaking to other people with constipation it's all a bit hit and miss with the treatments available. You could ask you GP if it's ok for you personally to take lactulose in the morning too but I don't forsee any problem with that and I really do think it might be just what you need to get thing moving! Yes you're right that fibre help to keep you regular but if I have too much I do become constipated again. I reckon with me it's because I have digestive/pancreatic hassle and I do sometimes overdo my fibre intake. I was just really thinking that the combination of dihydrocodeine and perhaps a lot of fibre might not be that good for others too. I hope you get on better when you try the lactulose in the morning too. All the best.

sorry to make other question but can we taking cocodamol if I’m allready on Gabapentin?

in reply toKinga2500

Yes that's okay. I originally had cocodamol with gabapentin but it wasn't really doing much for the pain so the GP gave me dihydrocodeine and paracetamol instead and I find it helps the pain better than the cocodamol. Hope this will help.x
