Hi everyone hope you are well today. Well after I had my fall on the 13th of January fortunately no scaphoid fracture but I have hurt my right hip badly I've not been able to walk for 2 months now. The pain is awful cant walk stand or sit too long at all so been back in my wheelchair. Has anyone else had this injury at their hip ? Wondering how long this is going to take to heal it's so awful

Hi there. That seems a long time for no improvement. Have you seen a dr about this? Maybe a scan might give some answers.

Hi emma thanks for replying they xrayed my hip and said no fracture so I'm being told it's all the muscle tendons ligaments that are inflamed it truly is awful barely walk so I'm using my wheelchair. It has swollen up that's why I went back to hospital. Not offered a scan on hip but Painmanagement consultant arranging scan on my back. Pain horrendous tbh. Hope you are well

Ligaments can take a long time to heal. They say it is often worse than a break for speed of healing. But no improvement after 2 months should mean at least a scan. Maybe try and push for one, say your quality of life has deteriorated dramatically. But if your pain consultant is arranging a back scan it might give some answers. I have had a lot of MRI’s, it was mostly lower back related but on a few occasions they included the sacrum area too. This involved an hour long scan but it shows a lot of detail. It prob will show if all is well with the lumbar and sacrum region which can give pain down the buttock/ hip/leg. Hope you will be fitted in soon.

Hi again you see I had a back op in 1999 l5 dissected and had ongoing issues ever since lots of nerve damage down left side and I have incomplete cause equine syndrome so on meds for life have sciatica constant on left side but after my fall I've took it down right side on outer thigh which is unusual for me and now I have tingling on my foot so I'm a bit concerned atm. I've suffered alot of pain but this is just terrible

I sympathise, had CE and because of it 3 discectomies and then 2 years ago a fusion of L5/S1 plus a laminectomy of L2/L3. So I know what you are feeling. For me the fusion worked well and solved the back leg issues. Just left with the front leg pain and nerve crawling. Just don’t fancy anything else being done. I just try and walk as much as possible which is possible again after 5 years of crutch life 🙃. If you feel this is even worse than before then it certainly is worth a scan. Good luck

Hi again omg you poor soul that's alot of surgery. I've been told on numerous occasions I have alot of scar tissue and they really dont want to operate a 2nd time unless it goes back to situation with cauda equine syndrome but that's crazy I was let down the first time by my orthopedic consultant he left it too late plus I was naive back then but now now. How do you cope ? I just said to consultant last week I feel so lonely living with pain as no one fully understands until they live it

It’s been a hard road. It’s impossible to describe to people what that horrible feeling is like, the nerve pain. Only someone who has had it will understand. It’s more than just a pain, it’s more than just a crawly tingly feeling. It’s all of that and more but for some reason your head cannot handle it and you just want to crawl the walls at times to make it go away. I am lucky that the back leg pain is now virtually gone, just a shame it’s now driving me insane at times at the front. But walk wise it’s easier. My back gets incredibly tired at times and achy but have to just get on with it. After the first op I was on crutches due to complications but at least they have gone. I had a lot of scar tissue too but it did not stop my consultant going in again, they won’t operate to just take away scar tissue though as it comes back. I had a neurosurgeon but the most important issue is experience I feel on the part of the surgeon. I am happy to talk more but it might be better on pm?

Hi emma2017 yes you hit the nail on the head there. I started on duloxitine and they took the stingy feeling away from my toes but rest of left foot still has different sensations. I live with my partner and son but it's still a lonely life as your in your own wee bubble and cant escape they help as much as they can but I hate losing my independence. Hope you are well today

So sorry - unless you experience the pain yourself you have no idea how long each hour seems, and how the fear of more pain grows in your mind. The nights in this convalescent home seem a hundred years long, and you absolutely dread having to move to do a wee! As for seeing the physios advancing toward you - you just wish you could run in the opposite direction!

I just rang a local chemist for general advice, and I don't know why I wasn't put on Tramadol straight after my operation, in spite of some risk of addiction.I had sciatica some years ago before this, and a very good chiropracter got mine right for years afterwards, although felt worse for a short while.

No-one should pontificate about pain unless they have ever tried sciatica!

Tramadol is good but pregabalin is very referred pain specific. I have been on both and found pregabalin better for the referred pain. The drawback is the dependancy. I am trying to come of it now. As I was on the highest dose allowable it’s been tough reducing it. I am now down to 75mg a day.

Hi emma2017 I tried tramadol years ago but I'm one of the ones that gets the itch with them I had to come off them have weird skin as it is. I've been on gabapentin for alot of years but did try pregabalin at one point I didnt like the way they changed my mood I felt very low so switched back to gabapentin and been on them ever since. I was on morphine for 6 years and I decided I'd had enuff the brain fog was awful so I tapered over 6 weeks and it was real hard couple of times felt like throwing the towel in but I done it and would never go back on them . I've hardly slept all night with pain at hip and sciatica this just doesnr feel as though it's getting any better be 3 months soon

Yes it’s hit and miss for people with all medicines. I use dihydrocodeine for the pain in my back which works better for me than just codeine or tramadol. Hope you find an answer soon Betsy.

Hi emma2017 thanks for the reply. Yea I've tried loads of different meds over the past 30 years but nothing touches sciatica. I just want this pain gone it's really stopped me in my tracks starting to feel abit down with it all tbh. Where are you based emma ? I'm in Scotland

Emma2017 profile image
Emma2017 in reply to Betsy50

Hi I am in Yorkshire. My husbands father was from the highlands, we used to go there a lot, beautiful area. Where in Scotland are you from?Sciatica is the pits, you are right nothing touches it properly. For me pregabalin took the edge away but that was all. They once tried nefrepam (I believe that’s right). It’s a strong drug which helped with the pain but made me delirious, if it doesn’t have that side effect for maybe that’s one to try? It’s hard.

Thanks for your advice and good luck for the future! I am awake at 4 am and only slept at all for about two hours after a dose of Oramorph earlier. I am writing a list of the things that I want to discuss with the pharmacist who is coming tomorrow, so will add this!

Betsy50 in reply to B-B4

Hi B-B4 how are you today ? I've been up all night with pain just wondering when it will start to feel better that's 3 months now

B-B4 profile image
B-B4 in reply to Betsy50

You poor soul - you must be going nearly insane! I was awake most of the night too, and in some pain as well - had to ask for more Oramorph.Talked to the doc today and she has put me on Tramadol instead of codeine today to try.

Physios say I am doing better, but say that I feel more pain because I am not positive enough. I think that is a load of rubbish myself, and doesn't make any difference. I don't think anyone can feel positive if in awful pain anyway, to be truthful!

Betsy50 profile image
Betsy50 in reply to B-B4

Oh yes I'm going crazy since last night uch I know I think its total crap tbh this positive thinking never stops my pain. That's good your physio going well glad to hear it

I do hope you get a bit of relief soon Betsy - Iam lucky that the pain has only been agonising for 2 weeks and that has been enough to make me feel very, very depressed. I do realise that many

people have it a lot longer, and I have donated to the GoFundMe pages of a few. Life is so unfair. Look at Ukraine - none of us can bear to even watch much news at the moment because that is so sad too. We can all only take so much, and I try to watch even a little bit of programmes on tv now and then to distract me from everything. Hard to do even that when exhausted and in pain though, so sometimes I just listen to music.
