Oral Morphine

I was prescribed oral morphine after my second hip replacement did not go well. I found that oral morphine did little to relieve my pain and caused chronic constipation. Sorry, not to be more encouraging.

Morphine is known to cause constipation. Gp should have prescribed something with morphine to help with this. Sorry to hear it didn’t help more with the pain though.

It may be worth letting your GP know that the morphine hasn't helped much with the pain as well as asking for something to ease the constipation. If he prescribes an alternative painkiller it may have the same side effect.

Oramorph is one method of administering morphine for pain relief . Have a chat with your GP to discuss alternatives ....MST works better for me as it is slow release although there seems to be an availability issue at the moment? Zomorph is another available in capsule form ....though having said that, if possible it might be worth discussing alternatives to morphine (king of constipation) Pelvic floor muscle exercises are really good to use and practice to strengthen toileting management especially while muscles are recovering following hip surgery......

Hi. I found that morphine slow release patches worked really well with no side effects. Might be worth a try?

Sorry to hear your in a lot of pain after hip surgery. Most strong pain killers have side effects, one of the most common being tummy upset/constipation. It sounds as if the morphine wasn’t helping to decrease the pain level though. Some people don’t metabolise morphine effectively so it’s worth a discussion with your GP or hospital care team about trying a different pain relief or possibly a stronger dose. You will likely be getting shown exercises and physio as well. Although it might seem ridiculous, doing these exercisers should help speed up recovery and reduce your overall pain.
