I had an epidural steroid injection into my lower back four weeks ago at the hospital. Not sure if this is the same as a nerve block but I would say I am at least ten times worse than I was before the injection. My lower back is so much worse and my feet which were numb and burning are now unbearable. I really regret having it and I am hoping maybe everything will calm down once the injection wears off and just hoping it is not permanent damage xx

I had same results from mine it was clear it was not going to work for me so didn't have it again . It did settle back down after a couple of weeks this was many years ago before my surgery . Good luck

I reallly hope it settles down but not sure it will. Have an appointment with the Spinal consultant on the 21st June but don't hold out much hope! xx

Hi karjade do you have any idea what's wrong or what kind of treatment they are proposing . Has anyone mentioned surgery to you or is this your first appointment with a consultant

It started off with burning, numbness and tingling in my feet 24/7 and I was told by my doctor I had peripheral neuropathy. He referred me to a neurologist but all the nerve conduction tests were normal. I had pain in my lower back and then I had an MRI scan which was abnormal with damaged discs, etc. I was referred to a Spinal consultant and he thought it could be two crushed nerves in the lower back causing my feet problems. He said he would give me an epidural steroid injection to see if that would help. As I said, it is now much worse and I really wish I did not have this injection. I am going back on the 21st June but I know there is nothing more they can do. I cannot take any medication because of the side effects so not sure how I am going to cope with this! xx

Hi Karjade, my surgeon could not operate any more as there was no surgical reason to after my third op but as I was still in a lot of pain he suggested myofascial therapy. As luck would have it one of the leading ones happened to live near me in Yorkshire. I had never heard of it and it does not promise wonders over night but it does help in a multitude of issues. It might help in your case. I have only been twice so far but I think it may well help. I reacted quite severely to it which is apparently a good thing.

Thank you so much. I have googled it and found someone in our area. I live in Northampton and google has brought up two places nearby. One says myofascial release and the other myofascial techniques. Is it a form of massage? I have never heard of it either. They charge about £47 so is this about average? Can you tell me a little bit more of what they do. Is it just for backs? I am very grateful for your help as I will try anything xx

Hi Karjade. It’s the release one you want to be going for. As I have one of the top ones in the country nearby I get charged more than £47 an hour. It lasts an hour per session and they can give you some simple release exercises to try at home. It is for the whole body. It is different to massage. It is the myofascia that needs to run freely through the body and they find say the blockages which stop it flowing freely but cause it to crumble and therefore cause pain. I bought the book by the lady who treats me, called Living pain free by Amanda Oswald. She had similar problems to me 30 years ago and could not find relief whatever she tried and changed her career into this in the end and is now pain free. Hopefully I will as well in the end. It is worth looking around for a really good one as with all health related professionals. Good luck.

Thank you so much. I will definitely follow this up. The sessions last for half hour and it is worth having a consultation to see if they can help. Thank you again xxx

I feel the hour long ones are better. The book I mentioned is worth considering as there are a lot of self help tips in it as well. Anyway see how your consultation goes, it is supposed to be for everything.

Don't read my posts and start to worry about what may or may not happen I had terrible luck I think . If your consultant mentioned trimming of your problematic disc then I do have a friend of mine that had that procedure he was brilliant afterwards . He's very tall suffered more or less same problems as you had terrible back pain after his trim he was fine . He was a little uncomfortable after surgery but was soon back at work as a teacher no more problems . He reckons he has some days when he has a bit of a niggle but nothing like it was . My advice is to do your research into whatever they suggest ask lots of questions try to be as informed as possible I wish looking back I had taken my own advice . I was so desperate I put all of my faith in my consultant/ surgeon and then found out the type of surgery I had was quite old fashioned compared to today's standards . I wish you all the best hope everything goes well for you most important keep fighting try not to let pain define you it's bloody hard sometimes but staying positive is a must . Neil x

Hi. It is five weeks since I had my epidural and it definitely has not helped. I am in much more pain and the burning and tingling in my feet is unbearable. I have stopped amitriptyline because of the side effects but I definitely need something to help. What medications are you on and do they help? If I knew exactly what was wrong that would help but they just do not seem to know! I went to the physio yesterday and she gave me some exercises to strengthen my lower back. She suggested I get referred back to the neurologist but I am sure my GP won't so she is going to write to him. I do not seem to be getting anywhere with anybody! xx

Hi Karjade

I tried Amitriptyline some years ago and the nightmares i had were awful!

I now take Pegablin, Duloxetine and cocodamol. I do find that this combination of medication helps me.It doesn`t take the pain away completely but i don`t think i could do without them now. I do hope you get sorted soon .

Kind Regards.

Thank you. Still going through the withdrawals from amitriptyline which are awful and I am finding it hard to cope so I am never going back on them. They give you nasty side effects and then withdrawals when you try to stop them. Doctors do not understand when they put you on this sort of medication and think you can just stop it without any repercussions! xxx

Hi I had the operation nearly 18 months ago and have been in pain with my legs and back ever since.have been to the doctor's on numerous occasions and all I have been offered is painkillers which is not a solution I hope you have better luck than me.

I had my surgery in 2004 fusion with cages pedicle screws rods have been in chronic pain ever since . I knew I had made a mistake as soon as they bought me round from shock . After an eight hour op with eight units of blood my body when't into shock . When I came round from that I was in terrible pain it's never stopped . I guess what I'm trying too say your not alone in this shitty club we are all members of . I'm not sure though what the docs can do believe me when I say I have tried everything before and after surgery. Mine gives me painkillers too but I do believe it's only because he's trying to help and feels helpless . He has also put me on to numerous other therapies but nothing has worked it's a sad fact and horrible thought that you just have to live with it as best you can its crap I know but as yet I have found nothing that helps that much although my tens helps a little . I purchased the most powerful you can buy and have it on high power for hours your not supposed too but when in agony hey ho .all the best wishing you a pain free day Neil

Hi I have had quite a few of these and denervations as well (beside 3 ops). Sometimes it made it temporarily worse. I always had hot and cold flushes afterwards and a red face. Only the last one gave me some real relief. It is known to sometimes temporarily make it worse before settling down. In my case they always settled down and either did or did not help.

I hope it settles down soon for you, it can take a week or sometimes 2.

Hi

I've been referred for one of these injections and I'm dreading it. Take care everyone. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

HI Pinky, I had one done about 4 years ago an last one I have had done.

The Dr. was my pain Dr. He was unable to get the needle in. So He took the largest needle out he was allowed to use, an a little hammer. He didn't get me any num medication at all.

My husband was in the car waiting for me. He heard me screaming from inside. Needless to say I dumped that Dr. I haven't trusted any Dr. to do that again. Needless to say I hurt like hell behind that cause he acctually did damage to a nerve cause of him hammering it throught.

I hope you don't have any issues behind yours.

Emma2017 in reply toSassyZee

That was one shitty dr doing that to you. It pays to look around for a really well qualified and respectable one to do these injections. Done by the right one you should receive sedation and local anaesthetic and it should always be done by life X-ray.

I had a branch block injection and an SI joint injection, it took about 4 weeks to get any real relief from both, I did feel worse after but I thought it was worth the increase in pain. I’m now waiting for the next procedure whereby they use radio frequency to burn the offending nerves (all of the above are done under X Ray) hopefully after this I won’t have to take any more medication as I hate the side affects, have you tried a tens machine? I find this to be really useful, hope you feel better soon

Med123 in reply toChance15

Yes, I did know that the nerve endings grow back, but i think I will take the chance as I have heard of lots of positive outcomes and if it means being able to come off painkillers (as these give me GERD problems, but that’s another story!!) I will be happy 😊

Yeah he was shitty.. I wish I could of proven he was the reason I had to have back surgery this year. He ruptured 3 disc when he did that.
