Hip replacement after having a dynamic screw fitted

looking for advice. I broke my hip 2yrs ago and had a "Dynamic Screw" put in. The break has healed but I'm getting severe pain and limited movement at times. After scans it was discovered that some of the bone surrounding the screw is deteriated, therefore causing me pain. My consultant has said that we could take the screw out, but that doesn't always solve the issue. So possibly a hip replacement soon. I go back to see him in January to discuss and decide. Has anybody else been through similar and can offer any advice please.

If you are being offered a hip replacement then take it. If the bones are crumbling they will continue and pain will get worse.

My husband had one 4 yrs ago due to spinal injuries and walking with an odd gait. Hip had worn out over 25 yrs. It was the best thing ever and after 5 yrs of severe pain in that hip it vanished after surgery.

Yes recovery was slower than usual for him but he did everything asked of him and never had any problems since.

The rest of his body is disintegrating but hip wonderful!

Thank you for your reply. Yes I think hip replacement is definitely the way ahead. I'm only 47yrs so thought I'd get a lot more years with my hip, especially as the fracture healed.

It sure is and 47 is relatively young to be having a hip replacement but needs must.

I worry about that as well. for two years now I've known about my avascular hip necrosis of both hips. on the one hand, i'm in immense pain all the time. on the other, if I get the replacement in my 30's what happens in 15-20 years? have they recommended you wait as long as you can or are they suggesting you have the replacement now? there are days when I'm fed up and ready for surgery, but I keep remembering their advice to wait.

Hiya, I haven't really had a good discussion about it all yet with my doc, I was seen by his registrar last week and we had a brief discussion on it. And I think he was thinking next year sometime. As the bone has collapsed more. So something needs done relatively soon as it's really limiting my mobility at times and I'm so fed up being in pain. I would have loved to have got another few years with my own hip especially as the break healed!! But not to be. If I was you I'd get it done asap, it's must be awful having it in both hips.

thanks... i'm leaning that way. when I remember how they told me to wait I wonder how they'd cope in my barely-able-to-stand shoes.

Yeah exactly, I know they are only giving you advice but it's not them in constant pain. The way I see it is, I would rather have 10yrs ( or however long a new hip lasts) pain free, than suffer and still have to get it done eventually.

It can be beneficial to take these screws out, it can reducing damaged caused around the area of where the screw was inserted. However your bones etc will still be damaged until you get your new Hip

A new Hip can be left dependent on age, however if offered take it on the understanding if still young you may need further operations in the future if possible.

Thankyou for the advice, it just seems pointless to get the screw out if the bone is still damaged. It's just so frustrating that this has happened and the original break has healed.
