Hip replacement

Hi everyone, my aunty went into hospital last night with an awful pain in her leg and hip area. X-ray showed she’s broken her hip and needs surgery tomorrow. Does anybody have any idea what that is about and are there different kinds? The saddest thing is her grandson’s getting married next weekend 🙈

Will she be home by then ? We have no idea so I remembered people here might just know others or have themselves experienced this?

nhs.uk/conditions/hip-repla... This link provides information on hip replacement. I have had both of my hips replaced. Recovery is individual - do what the physiotherapists ask as they are an important part of the recovery process...hope that all goes well.

HiFirst of all patients who have planned admissions to hospital for hip surgery tend to recover faster and discharged quicker. This is simply because their admission is planned and a lot of work has been done before surgery in order to prepare for discharge.

Your aunt appears to be an unplanned traumatic admission. There are many factors that will determine her length of stay in hospital. Where I live the average length of stay for traumatic hip surgery is three weeks. If your Aunt has any underlying medical conditions which need to be stabilised this can increase her stay. If she requires short term or longer term help at home after the operation this will need to be organised. Again this takes time. To be honest you will be better taking a one step at a time approach. If you are her named next of kin the multidisciplinary team will be in touch with you if required to identify any needs required for discharge, especially if your Aunt is unable to provide all information required.

As for the type of operation. This will depend on where the fracture sits within the hip. The surgeon or one of the team will look at the xrays / scans in order to identify the operation required.

All this information will be conveyed to your Aunt in order to gain Informed consent from her for the procedure.

There are a number of operations but the most common are

THR Total Hip Replacent

Hemi Arthroplasty. Half a new hip

DHS Dynamic Hip Screw.

Hope this is useful to you

I had THR (Total Hip Replacement ) when I was 74 yrs old... I do not think she will feel at all like attending a wedding that soon!! But... she may be a Super Woman & prove me wrong. If not... just make a nice video for her to watch!

Wishing her a speedy recovery!!! 😍💖👍

Hi Saeeda1, sorry to hear about your aunt. I had a total hip replacement at 41 yrs old (12 years ago). I was in hospital for 4 days after the surgery but it was a planned surgery not resulting from a trauma. I had a good recovery but wouldn't have been ready to attend a wedding that soon.

As has already been suggested, see if someone can video the wedding for her to watch it in comfort when she can.

I hope all goes well for your aunt xx

Sadly hip. Breaks take a long time to mend but she might. Be able to go in a wheelchair if she feels ok but it is major surgery and she may have to miss the wedding hope all goes well every best wish

I had hip replacements and was on my feet the next day however it's a painful recovery I was 61. The surgeon would be the best person to ask as he/she will know the individual needs. I would love to think she can make the wedding, fingers crossed.

HiI went into A&E last November having fallen in garden the previous week. X-ray showed I'd broken hip. I had Total Hip Replacement the next day and was in hospital for 4 days. I had lots of support when I came out of hospital from local health team - physio, OT, nurses - one or other visited daily partly because heart rate and blood pressure were up and oxygen level down. I wouldn't have felt up to going to wedding 7 days after operation. But was moving around flat by then and cooking own meals. Wasn't that long before I was going out for short walks. I had had right total hip replacement in 2016 and both knees replaced in 2013 and 2015 So now have full set. Hips easier to recover from than knees! Good luck to your Aunty. Hope all goes well.

You are so right about hip vs knee replacement. I’d rather have two hip replacements to one knee replacement.

Bilateral hips in 2008 and 2009. Bilateral ankle fusion in 2012 and 2013. L knee replacement 2003, right knee 2014. I thought surely 11 years since my first knee they would have made it more tolerable. NOT! I’m with you, I’d rather have my fingers broken, or my fingernails pulled out or 2 hips, 2 ankles before another knee replacement…LOL!

Wow, sounds like you’ve had it all. Hope you are able to get around ok. You have been through a lot. Hope all that’s behind you now. Take care and try to keep moving.

Just like most of us I have pain daily. Some days I cannot walk so I use my wheelchair. Some days I need a lot of help walking so I use my walker. Some days not as much help so I use my cain. However, all of those days are good days cause I get to be a husband to my wife of 25 years and a dad to my 24 year old son and 19 year old daughter. With the CKD and multiple other non-arthritis issues I have, as many docs have told me, I’m coming up in 7-8 years on my expiration date so no matter pain level or disability level I cherish every day!

Checked out of the hospital and went to work after hip replacements. Granted I worked a desk job, but those were the easiest joint operation I’ve had and I have had 18 of them. Good luck to your Aunt and family!

That's great news. So glad it all went well. Fingers crossed for a great recovery too. Make sure she takes the pain meds she's given and if its not doing enough talk to the docs before she leaves the hospital. In order to get the most from the walking exercises and physio, when that starts, her pain needs to be under control. 💖💖 xx
