Hi everyone I've only recently joined healthunlocked I don't know which site to ask my question but here goes. Does anyone suffer with frequent UTI I've got a kidney stone embedded in the meaty part of my kidney and I'm getting them every month. Finished 5 days antibiotics Thursday night and it's back again. The antibiotics I had with me because I was on holiday and I took them with me. Been to my local cottage hospital today and they are sending the sample to the lab. Hope everyone is well as can be expected xxxx

Hi Janet, i did have UTI a few months ago and as a nurse I would suggest to increase your water intake to hydrate, this can help dilute the stone and avoid high calcium in your diet as it is the most common cause to form kidney stones, also diet with high sodium and sugar can contribute to its formation such as softdrinks and syrups. Most women dont know that frequent sexual intercourse can lead to UTIs so always remember to pee right after and the most basic advice i can give you is to wash from front to back. Complete the course of your antibiotics too, sometimes we tend to stop taking the antibiotics when we feel better not realizing that not all the bacteria left our body and they tend to develop resistance to the antibiotics so the next time we use the same type, it doesnt work anymore and thats one of the reason why infection keeps coming back. Hope this helps.

It depends on what type of laboratory test they would perform, if they analyze your sample for a biochemistry in order to figure out what causes the stones usually takes within 4 hours to a day if its not urgent. However, if they analyze it for infection it may take longer than 2 days to get a preliminary result and 5 days for a final report cos during this period they have to allow the bacteria to grow in order to get the right amount to identify its strain by then the doctor can prescribe you the right antibiotics to fight the infection. Initially the doctor prescribes a what we call broad spectrum antibiotics that covers most bacterias but once your lab results are out your doctor may change that medication to the appropriate one. Goodluck!

I have had UTI infections on and off for years. Mine is not the same cause as yours, however, once your bladder lining is inflamed, bacteria can easily imbed themselves again. When I had had a bout of frequent reoccurrence , I am usually prescribed long term prophylaxis antibiotics ( taken at night, X1 ) low dose to keep bugs out and allow the bladder to lessen inflammation etc. if you have frequently reoccurring infections that may be a way forward. Alternatively , it may be worth varying your antibiotic depending on your lab results . I hope it improves for you soon

Hi there, trimethoprim does absolutely nothing for me. They always like to try this first but apparently the bacteria have become more or less resistant to this antibiotic. I insist on having macrobid for 1 week (the other thing is they just like to give it for 3 days now). Good luck.

Hello again JanetD21, in my experience.. we usually get prescription of antibiotics to take for 5 to 7 days with maximum of 10 days and it is believed that 3 days isnt enough and the chance of recurring infection is high on such a short course. If you may clarify this with your doctor on your next visit?

I should have my results in a couple of days from the lab hopefully then the correct antibiotics. It was my own fault I took ciprofloxacin abs with me when Ibwent away and I took them 250 mg x5 days and 2 days later another infection xxx

JanetD21, to relieve the pain, burning and urgency, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND: AZO Urinary Pain Relief Maximum Strength. It is an otc tablets that you buy at your local drugstore. Works almost immediately. I have used for years and could not get thru UTI without. Once they start you on antibiotics, I still take them for pain . I live in USA, hope you are able to find where you are. Go to your pharmacy and ask for it, tremendous RELIEF!!!! UTI's are so painful!!! Keep me posted 😘

I understand that (in England), if you have 6 UTIs in a year or so you can be prescribed a permanent lo-dose anti-biotic (wife has Cephalexin taken every evening, on a repeating prescription).
