Psychologists in SW London

Hello all :)

Does anyone know of a good psychologist in south west London?

And are psychologists covered by NHS in England?

Thank you :)

Some psychologists are available on the NHS - it will depend on whether the recommended people work for the NHS, have a mixed practice, or are solely private work.

Referral and wait times will vary from on GP practice to another - by and large you may well need a GP referral to see one.

There are some self-referral units in London tho' I don't know any in SW London.

If you're requesting a psychologist recommendation you might need to specify in which area? E.g., pain management, PTSD, anxiety, somebody who specialises in neurophysiological areas etc. etc.

ETA: a name that I know for chronic pain (practices as well as campaigns), tho' I know little more about him, is Richmond Stace who is a physio. who specialises in chronic pain - I don't know if he mentions psychologists on his website.

In that case, you might want to edit your post to pop in that information - and I don't know if there's an anxiety group on HU (there probably is) where people might be well-placed to make a recommendation.

ETA: just had a look and there are several anxiety groups on HU.

You say in another post: "Thanks! I am looking for a psychologist specializing in anxiety." That means a multitude of things. A lot of anxiety is a breathing problem. You feel a little bit anxious with good cause and you do something to your breathing and you end up feeling anxiety on an in an incapacitating way.

Try taking up yoga. This works with breathing. Being in a class you can network with all sorts of people. This in turn enables the practice of social skills.

Another thing to try is to join a Buddhist group. Many buddhists have an understanding of the mind which is far grater than any psychologist can teach you. Buddhists practice mindfulness and meditation. These practices help you become aware of what you are doing that makes you anxious.

Hope this has been helpful.

Very helpful, thank you John :)

Hi basically anyone you would be referred to on the NHS would be free.

If you want/need to go private you will need to pay. If you google it and put in your area you will be able to find ones near you. Good luck.

Not what you're looking for?
