Does anyone know does an epidural steroid take away the prickling sensations and pins and needles. Trying to do Physio but still really difficult with nerve pain. Should I get this shot?

I had a cordal epidural for back and satin pain going down both legs. I was put to sleep and all went well. However, from my lower spine right down to the back of my knees were numb for over 24 hours causing a few minor problems when going to the toilet. The results were good pain free. Unfortunately it only lasted 6 weeks. When I discussed this with the surgeon he informed me that as you are asleep they cannot guarantee that the right nerves are targeted. Since then I have had nerve root blockers on both sides of my back. They have always worked but vary in length of time they last. Longest has been 9 months and shortest has been 6 weeks.

Satin nerve sounds so gloriously silky ,smooth and pain free !

Hi

I had an Epidural three years ago and was told that the pain release it gives you varies depending on the severity of your problem. Mine lasted six days! However, I have known people who have several months of pain relief (but not completely pain free) from this. In answer to your question though, No it will not stop the pins and needles and prickling sensations (mine are from my hips to my feet with numbness on increasing occasions as well). My surgeon and chronic pain team have explained to me that this sensation comes from the nerves in your brain trying to send messages to your legs and feet to work properly but when the message reaches the area you have an issue, mine is lumbar spine, that the messages get all mixed up as they reach a kind of blockage and are getting confused and all the nerves can do is send a tingling sensation as they are all getting jumbled together and don't know what to do next because they can't deliver the original message sent down the nerves from the brain. I've been told that nothing will stop this in my case, However, a nerve block could work but that is not an option for me as I have had spinal fusion and the metal work is in the way of where the surgeon needs to put the nerve block in. So maybe give this a try but an epidural will not solve your problem. I hope this makes sense and helps a little in you making your decision. Please feel free to come back to me if you've anymore questions or I have been unclear.

Really hope they can find something to help you, you sincerely have my sympathy with this.

Regards

Donna

Not an injection but I take two 5mg tablets a day to stop the pins and needles and shooting nerve pain in my legs and it makes a lot of difference. Also benefits loosening tight painful muscles in my neck.

Duh,

Sorry Callum should have said off scrip use of Diazipam often used for back pain too. It's the muscle relaxant factor not anti depressant factor. Can't believe I didn't name the tablet!

Apologies

Do you know who does nerve blocks? Are they effective? What pill do you take?

The nerve pain

I had the epidural steroid which sadly only worked for a few weeks. When I woke up I was numb from the lower back right down to the back of my knees and remained that way for 2 days. I was pain free for 2 weeks but then the pain slowly started coming back. When I asked the surgeon about this he said they are unable to guarantee getting to the right nerve as it is just targeted at a local area.
