Ok, first off do you have spinal problems? Do you take medication? Have you had a past injury?

You state in bed at night - so any other time you can?

Ah that's a little more information. I wondered as I have several conditions to do with feet and legs (bilateral) but mine is not spinal problems. Sorry can't help - recommend you return to your GP or Consultant - they may help.

Jenf, I too have spinal stenosis, lower back and also neck. In my lower back it is next to the cauda equina which I worried about incessantly. Finally, I saw a neuro surgeon, a very well respected one, who told me that MRIs will show stenosis in lots of people and it does not automatically lead to surgery. I have no numbness or tingling or bladder probs so I now just get on with my life. I have chronic pain and I have found ways to cope. Some of the pain was from fear, I know that now. I'd rather have this pain than that fear so first, I suggest you get someone to explain to you what is going on in the structure of your spine and nerves and is it dangerous. It might just not be but you need to get an expert to talk to you about that. My question to the consultants was the same - I know I have pain but is this about harm ? They all said further harm was only as likely as anyone else's. that was good enough for me!

Make your appointment, write down your questions and concerns and make sure each question and concern is addressed before you leave. Good luck.

When is it you cannot move your legs?

If it is when you get into bed or is it after you have had several hours of sleep?

Sometimes when I wake up after several hours of sleeping I cannot move anything. A bit frightening the first time, but this can be something known as Sleep paralysis. The brain switches off the movement centre so that you dont act out your dreams.

The "you cannot move your legs" when laying down is worth having a serious discussion with a GP. A chiropractor may be helpful. They can usually do things to help that is beyound the ability of the medical profession.

i have spinal stenosis and if i try to lie down i get dreadful pain instantly so i have been sleping seated up in a recliner for some time now, i was provided with an electric bed with adjustable backrest and when i started trying to use that with the back at around a 45 degree angle i would wake after a couple of hours unable to move from the waist down and it would not improve til i pulled myself forward so that i was actually leaning forward- then the sensation gradually comes back over about 2-30 minutes. i have spinal stenosis in he lumbar region and disck bulges after i fell an crushed a couple of vertabra- i hada vertabraplasty at the time of the injury but have had major problems ever since and i am still working with my doctors to improve things but -they have suggested that in my case the damage from the fractures and the spinal stenosis must get accentuated when i try to lie down or recline and it pinches of the nerves to my legs. i also have bladder problems that were initialy blamed on Ms but now thought to be because of my back too

i would go back to your doctor and tell him about this , it may be the sleep paralysis that has been mentioned but that usually is a very brief thing. it neds to be assessed. if you have bladder and bowel issues as well you definately need to see your doctor asap as cauda equinq syndrome comes to mind and if that goes und diagnosed it can lead to permanent loss of sensation and or function (its not common though but is considered an emergency condition)
