Obstructed bowel.

Admitted to hospital last Sunday , vomiting and abdominal pain ,not getting resolved, had a couple of painful procedures but made no difference ,talk of putting a stent in ,ruled out surgery due to disease progression. I'm very scared , I wanted the last months of my life to be comfortable at home with my husband and making memories for my family, and a lovely last Christmas, I'm beginning to feel I will die here in hospital, I feel so sad and despondent. My hospital Dr is waiting to hear from Nottingham as to whether they would do a stent, if not I'm guessing weeks of pain before I die ,my oncologist told me in September I probably had less than a year to live , I'd come to terms with that, but this is beyond me . Anyone else been in the same situation .Cheryl.

Oh Cheryl. That really sounds scary but I hope you can get the stent. Are palliative care involved? They need to make you comfortable whatever it takes. I’m sending hugs and hopes for the stent. Xx

I have a blocked bowel as well I had hoped to be home for Christmas as well but I don’t think this is going to happen. Unfortunately this is a horrible disease which doesn’t care about anyone. It would be good if the stent works but whatever happens make the most of family and friends.

My arms are around you, Cheryl. No doctor can predict. Stent or no stent, palliative care and a hospice should be able to make you comfortable so that you will have the good Xmas you have set your hopes on. You or your husband must insist on pain relief and someone who can listen to you and provide emotional support. Fight for these or get your husband to fight for you. Emma xx

Hi Cheryl. I’ve been reading your posts for quite a while. My wife Carol was in exactly this position at the end of 2018, and sadly it did not resolve for her. Having said that, she found that a naso-gastric tube relieved her symptoms and allowed her to be hydrated while we waited to see what might happen. She tolerated it really well and when it was clear that the blockage wouldn’t clear, she was able to come home with the tube in place and be reasonably comfortable while we cared for her here. So I pray your condition will resolve, and if it doesn’t that the medics find a way of relieving the discomfort as they did for Carol. With my very best wishes, Nick

Thank you Nick , looking like a stent and surgery is ruled out, I have a nasal gastric tube but it doesn't seem to be helping much , I'm pleased your wife was able to be cared for at home. Thank you for your kindness.Cheryl.

Hi Cheryl, my bowel blocked 4 times 18 months ago. I was admitted to hospital vomiting faecal fluid ,and with iv fluids it resolved itself. On the 4th time it was bad and the consultant mentioned a stent but because my cancer is inoperable and around the bowel he didn’t think it would work. However the stent was put in place and I can eat most foods. It has been in place over a year now. I hope you are able to have the stent and it will solve your problem

Thinking of you 🙏xxx

Hi Cheryl, I am sorry you are suffering and hope they can do something to make you comfortable and home with your family. Depending on your circumstances they may be able to get you home with home care etc, please speak to the palliative care who are very knowledgeable at helping. I had my mum home for the last few weeks of her life and had 2 nurses attend morning, noon and evening to help me. Sending you a gentle hug, Kathy xx
