Vegan diet with ileostomy for low methionine

Hi , Does anyone manage a vegan diet successfully with an ileostomy? I had chemo then radical debulking last October then chemo till January. I’m currently on 3 weekly Avastin but my Ca125 is increasing . There is evidence that methionine ( an amino acid in protein ) ‘ feeds the cancer’ . A low methionine should starve the cancer but involves no meat, fish , dairy and other proteins. However, Soya protein contains no methionine . I have made and bought a number of meals eg vegan bolognaise and M&S plant kitchen ( with soya protein( but it is disastrous for my stoma output which becomes large volumes of liquid even with loperamide .

Can anyone make any suggestions ? Has anyone tried this low methionine diet ?

Hello Lookingahead,

I am new to a stoma, for bowel cancer this time (my ovarian cancer was 2011 and 2013) so am learning to live with it too. I've just joined the Ovacome Stoma Group to help with guidance as to what foods and exercise is best.

Your specific diet question - I suggest you ring the Ovacome Support team on their freephone 0800 008 7054 as I'm pretty sure they have done some posts on here in the past about diet etc.

Warm wishes and good luck. L

I have no experience of this myself but I would contact your dietician. I got good advice and support from my Macmillan dietician. Your oncology consultant should point you in the right direction. I imagine that's going to be a tricky one so will need expert advice. I was depleted of protein after my operation and had problems eating (I'm almost vegan) and the nurse recommended ActasSolve Smoothie shakes made by Aymes (on prescription) which are vegan. It contains soya protein and other vitamins and minerals. It's a powder that you can mix with 150ml water, soya milk, or oat milk for example and comes in various flavours. I did not end up with a stoma thankfully. Are you able to eat rice with marinated tofu and veggies? That's quite an easy meal to prepare. I'm not a good cook myself!

Good morning lookingahead

Thank you for your post asking about managing a low methionine vegan diet with an ileostomy. Ovacome has some general information about stomas that may be of interest to you which can be found here ovacome.org.uk/blog/about-s... . There is signposting on this factsheet to Colostomy UK colostomyuk.org/support/ who may have more specific information available regarding low methionine diets.

As lesleysage has mentioned, Ovacome facilitate a stoma support group that may be of interest to you. This is a friendly and supportive space for anyone living with a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy to chat with others in similar circumstances. The group meets virtually on the third Wednesday of the month between 11am – 12:30pm and our next session is on 21 July. There is information about joining the group available here: ovacome.org.uk/Event/stoma-.... We often have a stoma nurse present in these sessions, and I would be happy to raise your query with them to see if they have any further information for you on this matter.

As KH59 suggests, a Macmillan dietitian may also be able to provide more specialised answers to your question.

If you would like to get in touch, our Support Team can be contacted on the Support Line on 0800 008 7054 or 07503 682311, by email at support@ovacome.org.uk, via the Instant Chat function on our website or pre-booked for an individual video call. All our services are available Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm.

Best wishes

Annie
