Driving?

Hello there

I will be 4 weeks post operation next Wednesday. Have had debulking surgery. I was wondering when other people started driving again. I met with chemo doctors on Friday & asked, but found them a bit vague. I spoke with my insurance yesterday & they said we leave it to your doctors advice.

Thanks a lot

Sending healing & love

I found that driving after 4 weeks was too soon, at 5 or 6 weeks it was better.

I started driving again at about 4 weeks but only for short distances. It depends on how you are coming along and whether or not you have pain or swelling, etc. If you can sit comfortably with the harness/seat belt around your lap and do not have difficulty or pain when moving your legs (such that might put you and others at risk if you do not respond quickly enough) and/or don't fear a quick stop (all the muscles tense) you might consider driving a short distance. Of course, if you are still on pain meds for any reason you might not wish to drive. Otherwise, best to wait until 6 weeks or later.

My oncologist and insurance company both said ‘drive when you feel ok to’. We all heal at different rates so if you feel ok then drive.

I’m still not driving yet ( 7 weeks after my debulking surgery) as my abdomen is still painful so would not feel confident doing an emergency stop right now.

It is illegal if you feel you wouldn’t be able to do an emergency stop.

I sit in my car & go through the motions of doing one to help me decide whether I’m ready to start driving again or not.

I love driving.

Hope you get behind the wheel again soon xx

I drove after three weeks but had healed well and felt able to. My nurse said to sit in the car and whilst stationary, ensure you can comfortably check your blind spots and go through the motions of an emergency stop. If you can do those without issue then you would be ok to drive x
