Financial aid from Macmillan’s

Does anyone have any experience of financial aid from Macmillan’s? I have a friend who is a cleaner who has had a hysterectomy and is about to start chemo so can’t work any more. She has been told by the DWP she is not entitled to benefits so doesn’t know how she will pay her rent. Any advice wekcome

Hi Julia, they have financial advisors that you can speak to who can also help with benefits advice. The main Macmillan number is the one to ring or she may find Macmillan people at her hospital. It’s so appalling that people are left ill and worried about paying the rent x

I was/am self employed and retirement age, so only have a minuscule pension.

I was bedridden with my cancer and it’s treatment, and had to shed most of my business, leaving me in a terrible financial state.

But, a lovely MacMillan advisor came to my home and helped me apply for the special allowance, even though I was getting better. She also applied for my blue badge and advised me about applying for Universal Credit for my daughter.

Having the Macmillan advisor sort the application makes it much more likely to be approved.

So, she should do this today,

And yes! It is appalling that we can fall through the cracks when we are self employed, but are struck with such a catastrophic illness.

Yes I received a grant of 400 pounds. I spoke to someone at Macmillan. I had to fill in a form and she signed it along with ONC nurse. Took about 4 to 6 weeks to come through. If you are on a low income you can also get help with water bills. Water sure plus scheme Thames water. Others probably assist. Hope this helps.

If she is Self Employed and has paid enough National Insurance she can claim New Style ESA. Its not complicated just a one hour interview at the job centre then a wait to hear back. Maggies Centres have Financel Advisors who are excellent.

Yep,we were able to claim benefits,Macmillan sorted it all out for us,and also a grant of £400 for some immediate expenses.They will help with everything that you may be entitled to.
