Finally got a surgery date

Hi everyone I hope you are all keeping well.

So after weeks and weeks of waiting I finally have a surgery date.

I had an extra ultrasound last week which was just meant to be for a study they are putting me in for (Rockets study) but there was some concerning findings so I had to come in and see the consultant today.

The mass has doubled in size within a month and there is increased blood flow to the mass and I now have fluid in my abdomen. He now thinks he will not be able to save any of the ovary and it's looking more likely to be cancer so surgery is booked in for 25th April.

I'm glad it's not too long to wait but I'm absolutely terrified at what he will find. Not to mention that the best case scenario means I'll be going through the menopause before I'm even 30.

Anyway I'm just trying to accept that it's not great news, thank you for all your support over the past few weeks,

Emma x

Oh dear, Emma,

That is terrible news. And you are SO young!

Still, thank goodness you had your children early and now you can get the treatment you need.

Menspause will be the least of your worries, but at least You will have some form of HRT to keep you from getting osteoporosis, and it will not be too bad and will help to balance you out.

Finding out exactly what this is, will guide your further treatment.

You are going to need a good support system, friends, relatives and neighbors, because you will be very laid up after surgery.

The same goes, if you need to have chemo.

We’ve all been there, and we struggle through, but it really helps to have family and friends to help out.

The time will go quickly before your op, so try to get your home organised and make everything as simple as possible.

Make sure you have Netflix or Amazon Prime so you can be entertained in your bed! And books on your phone!

Best wishes for a good outcome,

Laura

Hi Emma. It’s a very tough time but try not to wear yourself with worry, at least until you know what’s wrong. You could get support systems in place, in case you need them. You probably have family or friends who will help with the kids while you’re having surgery. Hopefully those people will help if you need chemo. Say yes to all help that is offered and don’t be afraid to ask loads of people if they’d be willing to help, if you need chemo. Maybe a parent or in law or other relative would consider moving in with you for five or six days after each treatment, if you need it. You may not need it but if you’ve arrangements in place for the kids you’ll feel better able to cope.

Thank you so much everyone, even the consultant seemed quite shocked at how fast it had grown and the fact it is now producing fluid which I know is a bad sign.

Thankfully I do have an amazing support system around me with friends and family, the only challenge is that my partner works away, he is away for 2 weeks and then home for a week so it's going to be very difficult to sort time off and he's already worrying about what to do.

I'm still in shock I think, even though I knew this was a strong possibility it just seems so shocking still, I don't know how to describe it although I'm sure everyone here knows exactly what I mean and it saddens me to know that so many of you have had to feel how I'm feeling.

I have no idea how to tell the kids, I am waiting until after the surgery to find out exactly what I'm facing first, I don't want to scare them unecessarily.

I am eternally grateful that I had my kids so young, it's not normally a great idea to get pregnant at the age of 17 but my god am I glad I did now! I just hope this doesn't turn out to be high stage because the thought of leaving my kids is making my blood run cold. Urgh this is just so horrible.

Sorry that was a massive Mish mash of thoughts! Thank you all for being so supportive, I'm sure I will have more questions along the way and it is such a comfort to know you are all here,

Oh Emma 😕 I’m glad you have a date for the surgery - everything will become clearer once that’s out of the way and you truly know what you are dealing with. In the meantime, find some nice distractions for the next couple of weeks...I’m guessing the school holidays will make sure your hands are full. How old are your children?

Hi Vicki yes the kids will certainly keep me occupied, they are 11, 8, 6 and my step daughter is 3. I have a few things planned to do with them over the holidays which will be nice. I'm anticipating that I'll be laid up for a while.

I'm sure this two weeks will go quite fast, I'm dreading and looking forward to the surgery in equal measure! Thank you for your reply ❤️

My girls were 7 and 4 when I was diagnosed (so similar to your younger two), and it was so hard to know what to tell them. In the end, we just said that mummy had a poorly tummy and needed a big operation to try to make it better. They are 10 and 7 now and properly understand about it being cancer and what cancer is. It's really hard, but they are surprisingly resilient.

Oh gosh I've just looked at your profile and you've been through such a lot in the last few years 😔 it's amazing that your kids have been so understanding, I bet you are very proud of them ❤️

It's hard to know what to say, the 3 year old will have no understanding at all but the others will so I'll try to be as honest as I can without scaring them.

I hope you are feeling ok at the moment xxx

Just another note of support here and so sorry you have to go through the worrying part before you even know what you are dealing with--I find that the hardest after almost three years-the worrying. But do what you can to enjoy yourself with your family before the 25th and of course, you will have lots of time to do so after---but just don't waste your time on it full time (!) My kids were older when I had to tell them and they have remained a constant support along with friends and family. I am so glad to hear you have the same (and really hope your partner can work out the schedule to be around more when you need it---it sounds like he is going to try). I know you will keep us posted and we're rooting for you. oxox Judy

Thank you so much Judy, he is speaking to work today, I imagine they will be supportive given the situation. I am taking my eldest daughter out clothes shopping and for some food later so that should be nice, I'm aware it might be a while before I feel ok to do these things again so I'll make the most of it.

Hope you are doing ok at the moment xxx
