Any advice on Carboplatin and Caelyx?

Morning Warriors,

Due to start six cycles of Caelyx this Thursday ☹️.

Any advice on possible side effects?

Have previously been on Carbo/Taxol, Avastin and weekly Taxol so know each one brings its own problems.

Would be grateful for any help.

I have just finished 6 carb/ caelyx 10 Jan

Had it on a Wednesday ok while on meds but didn’t feel ok Sunday / Monday took about 2 weeks of not feeling quite right

But not to bad , had ulcers about 2 weeks after I could stock boots with with different ulcer meds I have but to be honest I think the best is just a salt mouth wash and be kind to yourself and rest when not feeling very good .

I had very dry finger tips towards the end of treatment so get a good hand cream and moisture regularly it can make your feet dry So I moistured them at night .

I haven’t been feeling ok this time as I have had a touch of the flu ☹️.

Hope everything goes well for you and not to many side effects.

Take care , Pauline xx

I had a bowel problem it seemed to stop working for a few days after chemo so my advice to you is to start with movicol or something similar

A few days before , but everybody is different . I did find this better than Carb/taxol

Wishing you well

Hi I found this regimen the easiest of all but we are all different I even managed to go to Portugal midway through to treatment. I have had carbo/taxol carbo gemcibide and Avastin over the past 5 and a quarter years and so far so good. Wishing you all the best Pam xx

I finished 6 lots of carbo caelyx in October and it’s definitely easier than carbo taxol and shorter time to administer! Constipation was the worst and I would perhaps start on some gentle laxative the night before but check with the nurses as they will give you laxido or movicol. The skin on my feet has become very dry and cracked so it’s worth getting a good moisturiser routine going. Luckily I avoided mouth ulcers but the hospital gave me a mouthwash just in case. The only other thing was my bloods were hit hard at about round 4 so anaemia was a problem temporarily causing breathlessness and fatigue but I still went on holiday to Majorca and managed to get some swimming in!! We are all different though so you may not get any of the above but I am sure you will cope ok.

All the best, love and hugs

Thanks Katsmum,

Brilliant advice.

Have bought a tub of Udderly Smooth moisturising cream, so will start using that prior to Thursday.

Take care xx

At the hospital where I'm treated, they automatically prescribe laxatives when you start chemo. Di

Hi start my six cycles of caelyx next Wednesday. I haven't had a break as on the day i finished my 18th cycle of Avastin they told me that my CA125 was 967 and that my scan showed that it was still present. Not happy but what can you do you are in their hands. Fingers crossed that the side effects are bearable. Good luck. Angie

Hi Angie

Really hope you’re treatment goes well.

Just got back from The Christie, appointment was three hours late due to emergencies.

Doctor explained possible side effects, fingers crossed that it’s not too bad.

Take care and hopefully we can keep in touch. Xx

Thanks for your reply. Did your doctor say anything about losing your hair. My consultant said i wont but all the information states it is a side effect. Will keep in touch. Stay positive xx

He did say probably will have hair thinning.

He also mentioned the chance of mouth ulcers, and complete fatigue for four/five days after treatment.

Will be in touch xx

I’ve def had hair thinning on Caelyx. Annoying for me as I went through weeks and weeks of the cold cap for taxol. I’m not a fan of it tbh (the Caelyx) but maybe as I’ve had horrible reactions. Everyone is different though so wishing you all the very best xxx

Hi how are you. Have you started your treatment yet? I start tomorrow. Have been at hospital most of the day for the kidney test and a talk with oncology nurse going through the procedure and what the side effects could be. Have decided to take 2 months off work as i dont want to pick up any bugs. Look forward to hearing from you. Take care xx

Hi Angie

Yes, had first cycle last Thursday 1st February. All went ok other than delay being called up to the department.

But have found today I’ve been unbelievably tired. Just hoping it’s a one off.

Think you’ve done the right thing taking some time away from work, the last thing you need is someone sneezing 🤧 near you.

Good luck with the treatment and please let me know how you get on.

It’s amazing how different treatments affect the body.

Good luck 😉 and please keep in touch.

Lots of love and hugs xxx

Hi hope you are ok. I had my 2nd dose yesterday after having to wait for 3 hours for it to come up to the ward. My appointment was 9am!! I am hoping that my fatigue wont be as bad as after the last one. If it wasn't for the puppy needing his short walks I would probably have been a couch potato. Keep in touch. Xxx

Hi Angie

How are coping with your treatment? Well I hope.

I’ve emailed my consultants secretary to get an appointment before my next treatment to discuss my fatigue.

Keep strong and take care. Xx

Hi Angie

Thanks for your message.

Had my 2nd treatment last Thursday (1st March) and I’m really, really struggling! Have been in tears with the fatigue.

May phone The Christie next week to see if anything can be done. Certainly can’t cope with four months feeling as low as this.

How are you coping with everything, fingers crossed you’re doing well.

Take care, and thanks for getting in touch. Xx

I’m interested as well a due to start Caelyx soon x

Hi Scotty22

Hopefully you will be fine with this combination.

A lot of the ladies have found it quite doable and easier than Taxol.

I think my treatment might need tweaking slightly to make it more tolerable.

Keeping fingers crossed 🤞 that you sail through with very few problems. Xx

Hi lovely to hear from you. I had my 2nd dose last Wednesday. Had to wait 3hrs for it to come up to the ward!! I am also feeling the fatigue and very low. Slighest thing sets me off. Being on my own everyday doesn't help. Keep thinking is it doing any good. Should get CA125 results on my next visit on 2nd April and expecting a CT scan appointment to follow shortly afterwards. Take care. Have a good weekend xx

Hi how are you doing? I have had results of ct scan this week and they cannot see any signs of cancer. Also CA125 is now down to 140 from 990 at start after 2 chemos. Fingers crossed it has been laid to rest for a while!! I just want to get back to normal and enjoy life. Hope you are getting on ok. Have a good bank holiday. Xx

Hi Angie

Lovely to hear you, fantastic news regarding scan.

Just had my fourth treatment delayed due to calcium, potassium and magnesium levels being very low.

Doctor thinks it’s the carboplatin and is talking of stopping that and just having Caelyx.

Back at The Christie on Tuesday for bloods and if that’s ok treatment on Thursday.

So glad you’re doing well, may it continue. Xx

Hi lovely to hear from you. Sorry to hear your chemo was delayed. I had my 4th last Wednedsay and had to have an hours infusion of magnesium before i could start caelex. Also red blood count was low but we went ahead. I was hoping to enjoy the weather this weekend but have no energy to do anything. Hope you are ok and good luck with your appointments. Are you having caelex/carbo monthly? Take care xx
