Hi, following debulking surgery, I'm back on carboplatin but with taxol added in for the 3 remaining rounds. I had the taxol on tuesday and the carbo on Wednesday. Yesterday i started experiencing hip / leg / knee pains, which kept me awake for most of last night. Any tips on helping with this? Thank you x

Hello.

I had leg pain which was very unpleasant. I was prescribed Oramorph which I didn’t like taking so I found using a ‘rub’ called Biofreeze helped - it’s like a cold version of Deep Heat and you can get it in Boots. I also used paracetamol which worked to a degree if I took it regularly. The pains went away after about five days - I also had some neuropathy in my feet so after 4 Carbo/taxol doses, they reduced the taxol dosage by half, which helped.

I hope you find a solution to your problems, always ask your team for help.

Best wishes, Ali x

Hi. It is well documented in my posts how much I suffered after Taxol. I was hospitalized with partial paralysis because of neuropathy which caused tremendous pain in my arms and legs. But, I am not the norm so don't worry. When I got out of hospital I began taking L.Glutamine and Alpha lipoic acid pills every day. This was endorsed by Dr Onc who saw the effect after a short time and advised me to continue. I never had Taxol again but was told I had permanent nerve damage. Not so. Almost three months after being paralysed and unable to walk or even hold a cup I just have slightly numb fingertips and toes but each week more feeling returns. I can now walk and dance about, knit (which I'm sure helps the recovery), cook, etc. I'm hoping that this month I'll start painting again.

What I'm trying to say in a long winded way is that if the pain is the same as I had, which it sounds like as it's in the same places, then you can try the amino acids and not let it get a hold. But discuss with your team. It is widely used in US and Germany for Taxol patients.

Good luck. Kryssy x

Hi. I had pains in my legs after my first couple of doses of taxol. I used a TENS machine to help. It only lasted a couple of days each time. After that, my taxol dose was reduced for the remaining 4 rounds because of neuropathy, and didn't experience the pain. Hope you find something suitable for you.

Hi - I'm about to do my 4th and final carbo-taxol. Joint pain was really bad, especially ankle, after 2nd dose, and nurse had me start on vitamin B-12 and magnesium daily. Also Benadry helped me sleep durine the worst. Joint pain didn't go away, but the worst of it was eliminated with these simple steps. Check with your oncologist to see if these may help.

Will be "interesting" to see if I get same relief this go-round.

Hope this helps someone!
