Doxil and avastin. Ascites

Hello everyone

My mom is one year out and she has developed 3liters of ascites so she is now on Doxil and 1/2 dose avastin. She has high blood pressure again. We had to stop avastin 4months ago due to protein. She is 3c high grade. Has anyone had good luck with this chemo combo drying up ascites and getting a break (long)

I’m 3c high grade. Avastin was stopped for me too due to protein in the urine. I was on carbo and taxol. I’ve recurred so they are now putting me back on carbo taxol.

I’ve got ascites too.

I hope your chemo combination works well and that you get a very long remission. Xxxx

I have no experience of ascites so cant help you much, could you ring the Ovacome helpline on Monday. I have been on Avastin with Gem and found it worked well for me. Avastin can have side effects as you have found out but if your Mums bp can be controlled then it is worth having it

I've had this combo, although you'll find that on this site Doxil is usually known as Caelyx. It was a very successful combo for me. I too am stage 3c high grade OC. I was given Carbo/caelyx/avastin for 2nd line. I've now been in remission for 2.5 years - avastin has continued all that time 3-weekly as maintenance. I'm fit & well.

Caelyx isn't the easiest of drugs. It usually has many side-effects - these side effects can continue for 2 years from ceasing to have it administered. Therefore, avastin is often blamed for the continuing side-effects of caelyx. I'm sorry I can't help with ascites, as I've never had that problem. We all tend to have slightly varying side-effects. After 2 infusions of this combo, the side effects from the caelyx were so bad that my onc lowered the dose by 10% - it was all bearable after that. The side effects from avastin have been very few : runny nose and raised blood pressure. To remain on the avastin clinical trial, I have to have a BP below 140, therefore I have to take BP tablets (a catch 22). So all in all, a great success for me.
