Steroid damage to hip.

Hello all.

I just thought you would be interested to hear what has happened to me.

I have just found out after having pain in my left hip/buttock area for about 5 weeks

the MRI I had at the Royal Marsden where I have been having treatment for OC for the last 4 years

shows that I have developed avascular necrosis in the hip. This is caused by the steroids I was given

(most of us have these) to help with the sickness after chemo. It is a rare thing that can happen in the hip

or the jaw where the blood supply stops to the bone and the bone dies.

it means that I need an op to have a hip replacement!

Has this happened to anyone else?

HI Georgie, sorry to hear you are in trouble. Thanks for the information, I hadnt realised it either. I was told by my dentist that the jaw bone softens and your teeth may loose. I get pain in that area from time to time since my first recurrence. However I never got to the end of it because I was back on treatment. Now that I am drug free, I intend to visit my gp with a view to getting a dexa scan. Best wishes with your op

Georgie, so sorry this has happened to you. I was too scared to take these tablets after reading the side effects and was lucky enough not to suffer with sickness. Hope all goes well for you.

best wishes

Hello Georgie,

I've not had this side effect but did have development of cataracts in both eyes within a year of my second full chemo of carboplatin + taxol (one as standard regime and second as dose-dense) so both lenses were replaced. Also have knee ligament weakness permanently and patches of thinning skin on my eyelids and sensitive places which could have been as a result of the chemo. Thanks for the warning about the hip.

Good luck with the hip op. Warm wishes, Lesley

Hi Gina,

I have osteoarthritis, and have had both hips replaced over the last 3 years. I was beginning to be able to walk without pain, then I was diagnosed with stage 4 OC. I have had first line of chemo, which I finished in April, and am now on Avastin. I have terrible pain again in my groin and front of leg, which is what I had when diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Im wondering whether this is what has happened to me. I will speak to the oncologist next time I see her. Up to now I have been told it is side effects from chemo, maybe it is the steroids!

Thanks for the info

Hi Caz.It may be worth the mention but as you have replacement hips I would like to think it unlikely. I just think I have been really unlucky.

So many drugs have such different side affects . I cannot fault the treatment I have had at the marvellous Marsden and it certainly isn't their fault. The surgeon has decided to do a core decompression op which involves some drilling!.

oh eer! I am glad I have finished my Christmas shopping .

best wishes to all the lovely ladies on this wonderful site.

On another note, just wanted to tell you that I had a hip replacement 3 years ago and it was not bad at all--WELL worth the relief.
