A bit of background….. from a young child my teeth have always been easy to decay, chest type infections growing up, lots of sore throats, (back of my throat is a bit of a mess), although the painful throats improved by mid teens. Now it is mainly, heavy/tight chest and hoarse voice. Sometimes when I’m sitting up the acid comes up and makes me cough but again, after my teens I never really had the cough with my symptoms. I don’t get heartburn, trouble swallowing or any of the other typical acid reflux symptoms. I didn’t have the symptoms frequently, it was just now and then. It wasn’t until my mid 30’s I realised that this was probably silent reflux and the symptoms got a little more frequent. My GP prescribed Omeprazole and then I moved on to Ritadine until that was withdrawn and I have been taking Esomeprazole for several years after that. I don’t think it’s always controlled the symptoms but for the most part it has beennok. I didn’t know until recently that I should take my tablet in the morning half an hour before breakfast.
At the end of February this year I caught a cold, which turned in to quite a severe chest infection at the beginning of March. When it hadn’t cleared near the end of March I went to the doctors. I was diagnosed with a lower tract respiratory infection and a few days later, pleurisy and I was prescribed antibiotics. This did not clear it so I was given a course of steroids. My bloods showed no infection but I was coughing up green phlegm. When I was breathing I could hear my chest “rattling”. The steroids eased it a little but it was still quite severe. Back to the doctors to be given a blue inhaler with the suggestion of asthma. This did nothing so I was then given a brown inhaler, which helped a bit and more antibiotics and steroids. This helped a lot more but the cough is still there although definitely not as severe and my voice has been hoarse for almost a week now. The doctor also said my nasal cavities were slightly swollen so prescribed a steroid nasal spray and Famitadine to take along with the Esomeparazole.
I had an endoscopy today and the results were; Normal IGD. Tiny benign inflammatory nodule in GOJ which was biopsied. Mid oesophageal biopsies to exclude eosinophilic oesophagitis. No evident reflux oesophagitis.
So 6-8 weeks for biopsy results. I don’t understand how there is no evidence of reflux oesophagitis (don’t get me wrong, I’m glad there is not.) but I don’t understand where the cough and hoarse voice is coming from.
Has anyone else had eisinophilic oesophagitis?
Thanks, hope this has made sense.
