Acid / anxiety
yes I’ve had it since menopause. Lived with it for years now. Recently had a very bad episode so finally went to drs. I had omeprazole 20mg given 28 days but felt better after 5 days so stopped - however I did watch what I was eating immediately I stopped taking. I know certain foods aggravate so have avoided, tomatoes onions etc wine also and also only drink weak tea and decaf coffee and eat eat very small meals and nothing after 7pm. However before this bout was also avoiding these ! So yes I do think stress anxiety etc have a part in triggering as I think it can become a vicious cycle - I was worrying about the acid which in turn makes more acid and so on so it was getting worse PPIs do help but when you stop taking you can get rebound acid. You need to discuss with your doctor. Maybe a different drug would suit your more. Also get checked for H Pylori.
You have my sympathy, acid pain is awful and a concern too as we know our oesophagus is being burned by it. If your PPIs aren't working then revisit your doc to see if there are any alternatives like H2 receptors such as Famotidine although PPIs are meant to be better. I cant take PPIs as they trigger my cardiac arrhythmias. As Pacer 369 said acid rebound can increase when you stop the drug.
Stress is a huge trigger for me. I am having an awful time with reflux currently, triggered by a difficult house sale and journeying back and forth to a town nearly three hundred mikes away to keep sorting things out. Also the change in diet as I have been eating more junk food for speed while being away and the change in water, all a perfect storm.
Be careful what you eat, spicy food, fatty food, tomatoes make me so poorly reflux wise. Have you had a disgnosis for the reflux. Many tests have shown me to have a weak lower oesophageal sphinter which allows acid to rebound. I cant have a fundoplication op to tighten it due to my heart condition and have been told it would make my condition worse.
Reflux is a horrid condition. I hope you get some relief and can try to reduce stress where and when you can.
no not diagnosed … I told the dr my stomache & chest were burning & mouth dry sometimes bad taste in mouth & they prescribed the lansoprazole for 28 days I’m taking it once a day 30mg but been having to take gaviscon at night
interesting about PPIs and arrhythmia. Had palpitations while menopausal and was checked out with Holter monitor ECGs etc and all good. Later had endoscopy and yes weak LES valve. Just happened to mention palpitations and the nurse straightaway said palpitations probably related to acid. Nobody mentioned this before not even when I was having the cardio investigations for them. Don’t get them often usually but while in the recent bad bout of acid phase I had 2-3 occurrences- interestingly one the day after I stopped the 5 days of omeprazole.
Thank you for your comments. Its taken me a long time but at long last both my cardiologist and gastroenterologist at the same hospital have agreed that my heart is affected by the state of my stomach. Wow its been a long time to get there, now looking for a solution if indeed there is one. Onwards and upwards hopefully. My cardiac arrhythmia first attack came days after an endoscopy showing acute acid reflux. Its so important that we do our own research based on own bodies. Good luck and happy Christmas.
I cant cope without gaviscon. Also consider propping up the head of your bed. A more raised position is meant to decrease rebound due to gravity. Dont let it become a chronic condition, ask for tests if it doesn't ease.
