Acid reflux symptoms 5 weeks into lansoprazole ppi

Hi guys I'm 5 weeks into 30mg daily of lansoprazole for acid reflux. Some days I feel it's getting better, but other days such as today it can feel as bad as ever, with acid in throat, heartburn and best way of describing it is a cold menthol type feeling in mouth occasionally. I should add I do suffer from anxiety so the daily issue of this has probably not helped with keeping my anxiety off this and possibly making worse. I have also had a several week cough which I have always had after a cold, so that's been unfortunate timing and probably not helped. My question I guess more is has anyone several weeks into their ppi still had days where they feel like it's not working, symptoms are worse etc? Or has everyone who found them to work had pretty much zero issues by now. Im hoping that while might be getting issues at week 5 that in another month I might find those drop away. Has anyone had issues at week 5 but felt fine by week 8 or 9? Thanks in advance for reading

I've also been on PPIs for two months and just when I think they're starting to work, the heartburn is back. I'm think I'm going to stop taking them. I'm also dealing with a B12 deficiency that's most likely related. Getting weekly shots now. Have an endoscopy scheduled next month.

It's mentally up and down all the time isn't it. I've had a cough which I know really isn't helping, same with the anxiety but I don't get how if ppi is working there can be bad days of it thrown in still.

Exactly. It should either work or not.

Trigger foods/drink? Stress?

My symptoms almost completely disappeared after two months of 30mg. Back a little at times but persisting with the higher dose was certainly beneficial.

Thanks for the reply, did you still have the odd bad day at a couple months in then, even though generally it felt in a better place? I think I'm getting a bit anxious about it working or not which along with my cough is possibly aggravating it all.

Have you tried Gaviscon. It can help by preventing reflux, rather than reducing the acid. Can help if you have acid in the throat. After meals, and before bed. Are there food triggers that you have identified, what kind of diet do you have.? I have found I can have good and bad days. Anxiety doesn't help of course. I had help from an ENT doctor, a barium swallow, and a speech and language therapist re swallowing issues. I now know what causes my symptoms, and that they are manageable, and worry less, even when I get coughing and choking fits.

I feel like I have behaved on my diet side to be honest. Typically at same time I did get a cold a few weeks back and I often get a cough after that lasts for a few weeks, so coughing probably hasn't helped the feeling of acid in my throat. And then I've anxiety which I'm guessing hasn't helped symptoms with having my mind fixed on it and being so aware of it. So dunno how much at this point that despite that ppi that anxiety is ramping it up at times. I haven't used gaviscon as didn't want to over do it with ppi, but that might be worth a try? Cough hasn't helped as I say, feeo if that goes then I will get a better Indication.

Are you generally anxious, or are you anxious about what your symptoms might mean. I am assuming your GP prescribed the PPI. Did you have any discussion about your reflux. The PPI reduces the level of acid, and the Gaviscon forms a layer on the stomach contents and stops the reflux. They have different effects, so it's isn't really overdoing one or the other. I take one PPI in the morning and Gaviscon at night. An ENT doctor advised me that Gaviscon is more helpful for acid in the throat.

I still cough sometimes, more often in the morning, but less bothered by it as I know it isn't serious, more annoying.

If you reach the end of your prescription and it's no better, perhaps you need to go back and talk to your GP. Meanwhile Gaviscon won't do any harm, and may help.

Yes I think I felt best when I stopped taking it. Persist. Has to be worth doing the time to see if you can come out the other side free from meds!

I know how you feel,I am five weeks into ppi's , some days I feel cured and then I get the symptoms again, I have had these flare ups before and it took some weeks to get clear, I don't think the tablets help with anxiety either !
