Today I went to hospital thinking I was having an endoscopy, I was told that the endoscopy was going to measure from my stomach to my nose so that I could come back and have another procedure done,
This would be a tube going up my nose and down into my stomach, the tube from my nose would then be attached to a box that would be round my waist, to check my acid reflux and would have to have it on for 2 days.
He asked if I understood and if it was ok…and I said no I didn’t want it, to be truthful it scared me a bit, it was never explained what would happen before I actually went to hospital
.Has anybody heard of this or had it done.

Yes I have had this test, twice, once locally and once in a London hospital. It is an excellent test to measure the acid reflux burden. Its well worth having. Not pleasant but I have had worse tests. Best wishes.
Hi, I’ve had the manometry & ph test after sitting in a consultation listening to a Gastro telling me there was no acid, I was at my wits end so had it however, I was not told what to expect and I didn’t read up on it so as not to increase my anxiety. If I’d read about it to be totally honest, I probably wouldn’t have had it, that said if I hadn’t had it I wouldn’t have been able to ‘prove’ the reflux so it was worth it in the end.
So it totally depends on your circumstances if you need clarification of your diagnosis and everything else is coming back clear it’s worth it, it’s undoubtedly uncomfortable but so is acid reflux 24/7 and if it puts you on a more informed course of treatment………
Thank you Gavis for telling me the name of it, nothing was explained to me about this procedure, in the patient admission letter the doctor said he would be performing the procedure himself with an endoscopy via my nose, I did wonder about it , I even rang to see if I would be sedated and they said it would be a conscious sedation.
When I was in the side room with the nurse going through my consent form, all this should of been explained to me.
The doctor at my local hospital refered me for this, so when I go back to see him on the 25th, I won’t be happy about anything, I have just downloaded the nhs fact sheet, surely this should of been sent to me, I couldn’t read up on it because I didn’t know I was having it plus I didn’t know the name of it.
I have had 3 endoscopy but never that way. It sound like you are in the hands of a very knowledgeable medical team. Mine was done orally. It sound like a good thing that they can monitor your reflux with a wearable monitor. Sound like you are in very good hands. I am a retired nurse and never heard of that way. Pray about it and trust God with the results. His plans for you are plans for good and not for evil.
Hi, I had this test last week. I had to go one day to have the tube fitted and the next day to have it taken out. It was attached to a monitor. The whole test was not as bad as I thought, just have to wait for the results now. Best wishes
hi there, did you have the measuring test first then go back to have it all fitted.
I was taken completely by surprise, I was just expecting a normal endoscopy and even asked if I would be sedated for the nose endoscopy, I think that was an opertunity for them to ex-lain everything.
Hi, no I had the measuring test done first then the tube fitted straight after. During the measuring test I had to swallow some water and eat some bread. Is this the same for you? Kind regards
Yeah I had it done and it was a breeze really. They spray that dentist stuff up your nose and onto the back of your throat so you can barely feel it other than a bit of cold metal. It really doesn't hurt at all and the whole thing only took about 15 minutes.
No but I have difficulty with the endoscopy down the throat and ended up having a fight with the Dr.!!!!! He advised I didn't have it again!!!!!! But at least I got diagnosed.
In the strict sense what they are offering you is not an endoscopy. It is a test to monitor the PH value in the stomach over a designated period. I think it is not necessary. It can not greatly influence the therapy. There are limited options to treat acid reflux and these options can be properly diagnosed without having to go through such an uncomfortable test. A proper endoscopy under a mild anaesthesia is sufficient to determine the state-of-affairs in your stomach with much less discomfort.
Without a discipled dietary lifestyle change you might as well forget all of it anyway, so keep that in mind. The fact that you weren't properly informed about your options does not speak for the primary care facilities involved. Look for a physician that will discuss all of the options and ramifications.
Thank you for saying that, I was expecting a normal endoscopy and got a shock when he was right in my face to start the procedure and started to tell me what he was about to do, I just said I don’t want it, he was quiet taken aback.
Nothing had been explained before hand and when I go on the 25th to the doctor that referred me I will tell him that, and your info will be useful.
