Disclosing to employer

Hi everyone,

I've been a member of the forum for a couple of months now and I've recently got a diagnosis of OCD. I've been given medication from my doctor and have started seeing a therapist to receive CBT.

What I'm struggling with at the moment is that I'm going to have to ask for time off work for my CBT appointments. I've asked for a meeting with my boss, but I'm a bit anxious about discussing why with him. I am sure there will be understanding, but I am just a little concerned if I am to disclose the reason why I need the time off, that I will have responsibilities taken away from me, and also if I am to mention that it is OCD, that my boss will think I need to wash my hands all the time.

I'd be grateful for any advice from anyone who has ever dealt with this about the best way to approach speaking to an employer about this.

Thanks for your help!

It's a tricky one, this. There is, of course, legislation to protect disabled people from discrimination or loss of employment, as long as they're capable of doing their job, and it sounds as though you haven't had any problem in holding down a job. That really is to your credit!

But having OCD does make us careful about who we tell. People do have misconceptions, like assuming all OCD constantly hand wash, as you say!

In this instance, I would be open, as you need to ask permission to go to appointments during work hours. Employers must make reasonable adjustments for their workers, and allow for medical appointments.

If there is any problem, then explain what OCD is and try to reassure your boss that you are still up to the job. It might be worth pointing out that people with OCD are careful, caring and conscientious and so can make excellent employees! But it sounds like your boss already has plenty of confidence in you.

If there is still a problem, it might be worth joining a relevant trade union, if you're not already a member. They can give support and information about your rights at work.

I second what Sallyskins has wrote.

My work is supportive of me, and I've also said if anything my OCD is actually a benefit not a inconvenience, and I'll be needing to ask for time off for my CBT soon, and I'm going to say I need a period of time off to attend a medical appointment, and it's not going to affect my working abilities, and I'm more than happy to work my time up, in my line of work I can work my time up, are you able to work your time up.

I also want to say congratulations in keeping working, because we know how challenging it can be.
