Hi all well ive had my procedure done with sedation(thank god ) i've got my results and it shows that i have a sliding hiatus hernia of size 4cm in my oesophagus and erythematous gastritis in the gastric body and the gastric antrum whatever that means ????
results of my gastroscopy: Hi all well ive had my... - NRAS
results of my gastroscopy
My OH has a hiatus hernia, which means the top of the stomach is a bit slack, so stomach acid can leak upwards. He gets bad heartburn with it.
Erythm.... means something is red in colour, so that's probably the redness caused by the acid reflux. I think its called Gord. Gastric Oesophagus Reflux Disease.
Does that make any sense?
You are correct (GORD) is normally treated with PPI's or drugs that inhibit the production of acid. Also life style advice. Foodstuffs that can affect the sphincter or entrance to the stomach and allow reflux to occur, eg coffee, red wine, cheese and chocolate. Like all good things, should be eaten in moderation.
If you think of your stomach in 3 parts, top, middle and bottom. The fundus, the body and the antrum.
The antrum is the lower part, that joins onto the duodenum. Nutrients and vitamins are absorbed in the duodenum.
The redness is caused by inflammation, the doctor will have taken biopsies from this area to determine the best course of treatment for you. Omeprazole or lanzoprasole are 2 PPI's the doctor may prescribe either.
Depending on your symptoms, they may also ask you to try and loose weight if you have a high bmi or are overweight.
If you stomach has a delay in emptying they can also prescribe domperadrone or motilium, this can increase the emptying process, so digested foodstuff doesn't stay in your stomach too long.
Treatment normally last for 6 weeks but some stomachs take longer to heal, your doctor will advise.
Good luck

Carole
Watson is your personal helper with this one!!
So my suspicions were right Natalie :)) and I'm so glad u did opt for the sedation ....like I said certainly the better option.... hernias are very common and I take lansaprozole for mine and have done for a long time. Glad it's all over for you Claire xx
Thanks claire, yes the sedation was very good never knew anything at all,off to to the doctors now to hand in the results and will find out today to see if my alt levels have gone back to normal,if it isn't one thing its another.xx
Thanks claire xx
I had sedation for a scope once but I really react to drugs, woke up rather than being drowsy and asked if I could tap dance .. In the bath...TAP dance....doh. Glad I don't get it too much my jokes are bad enough lol xx glad u got a great answer, that's why I like this site, you get help on all sorts of stuff! Hugs Axx
Can I ask what symptoms you had? I'm now thankfully in remission and only have to take folic acid tablets. MTX and Enbrel I inject. I have had bouts of indigestion (well I think it was indigestion) but this corresponded with taking steroids. I was on 1600mg of anti inflammatories a day, I took them for nearly five years. Anyway since I've stopped taking them I have stopped taking my stomach protector and I have had bouts of really bad indigestion (again that's what I think it is). The last one was a few days ago. I have started taking my stomach protector to see if it helps and it is slightly. I think that I shouldn't need to take it if I'm not taking anti inflams because my stomach doesn't need protecting now. But I am now thinking that I may of done some sort of damage to my stomach with prolonged use of an high dose of anti inflammatory drug.
I have had discomfort even after drinking water, was awake nearly all night a few nights ago. The discomfort is in the middle of my chest. Sometimes it's like a full feeling, I don't mind that, but it gets a problem if it gets more intense. I also sometimes have problems when swallowing food i.e. it's painful as the food goes down, rather like if you swallow something that you haven't chewed properly. When all of this is happening I found it a little uncomfortable in the evenings just to swallow, I'm not talking about eating or drinking here, you know I mean how we just swallow our saliva. I've google heartburn because I was wondering about acid coming up from my stomach, but what it describes doesn't happen, I get no burning sensation in my throat, just a sort of fizzing.
I know what a lot of you will say....go and see your GP, but I don't want to waste an appointment if it's just indigestion.
Paula
Hi paula,my symptoms were my stomach bloating after eating just a banana, heart burn, feeling like i had something stuck in my chest even after eating soup, but what was driving me insane was at night when i lay down it hurt where the food was getting stuck, but also looking at my results i've seen another thing that they have found erythematous duodenitis in the duodenal bulb what ever that means i don't know( if someone can help with this please )
My advice paula is do not suffer go to your doctors and ask them to investigate, you won't be wasting the doctors time thats whathey get paid for.
Take care xx
Thanks Natellie for you reply.
I don't get stomach bloating, but how you describe something being stuck could well be the same that I get when I said a full feeling. I've also found out that when it happens it is worse when I lay down. I've taken a stomach protector each morning now for the past three days and it's alot better. No problem at all last night when I had my dinner, the day before it was quite bad. I worry that if I go to see my GP, tell him whats what, he will turn around and tell me I have sorted the problem myself, so why am I there. On the other hand, somethings not right, because I shouldn't need to take the stomach protectors now I'm off the anti inflams.
I worry that I am treating the symptoms but not getting down to what the actual problem is. It's the discomfort of eating food that really bothers me the most, surely that can't be put down to indigestion. I am picking up my meds next week, I think I may ask the pharmacist advice, or I might even ring the doctors surgery up to have a telephone consultation.
Just want to ask, were you taking a stomach protector prior to your problems?

Hi paula,no i wasn't taking any stomach protectors just the odd gaviscon, but really i would make an appt with your doctor xx
Thank you for replying Natellie.
It's obvious that your GP thought you need investigation and didn't just give you a prescription. Like I've said, it's worrying me that I am treating the symptoms and not really knowing what it is. Lots of things go through my mind, I'm a very deep thinker and I always like to come with a logical answer to everything.
It's all settled down again, so tomorrow I'm going to stop taking my stomach protector (I just hate having to take tablets) and if it happens again I will phone my GP's surgery up.
