Hi Rockpool

I have palpitations(also on BP medications). I had a treadmill test and it showed an SVT. When I saw the cardiologist he thought it was to do with the inflammatory changes going on in my body so no further tests were done as I was due to start on MTX.. I was OK for a few months then I started having them again, often just whilst sitting, felt almost like I was having an adrenalin boost. They haven't been so bad the last few weeks.I don't think the medication causes them. Have you been checked to see if you are anaemic as palpitations can be one of the symptoms. Hope it all settles down for you, its a horrible feeling.

xx

Hi

Thank you for that xx I am getting bloods down tomorrow for the usual check-up so might mention it to the nurse. Do you not get fed up of different things happening?

Take care xxx Fiona

I agree with Beth, your GP is the best one to discuss things with, at least they can arrange the proper tests and document the way you are feeling, and refer you to the relevant consultants.

I do get fed up with different things happening, there seems to be something different every month and I sometimes feel I am going round and round in circles. It seems RA can have a knock on effect on nearly every organ in the body. In the last 2 years I have seen rheumatologist, opthamologist, cardiologist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist.

Talk to your GP about it, hope you get sorted.

Hi Rockpool

I'd urge you to make another visit to GP, these palpitations may be nothing to worry about and simply caused by stress, but they should be checked out.

I went to my GP complaining of chest pain/palpitations and fatigue which had been going on for some time, because of my history of high BP and fast heartbeat, I was referred to a cardiologist.

After various tests I was diagnosed with Left Ventricular dysfunction (heart failure) and Tachycardia, still waiting for a Cardiac MRI to find out why this has happened.

Go see your GP about it, I'm sure he/she would say it's far better to be a nuisance than sorry later!

Thank you Beth. I am actually wondering if my blood pressure now is too low. I ended up in hospital twice in one week because of the sulphasalazine ( they think).

It seems to be after I eat something..weird..the GP I went to is a guy who puts everything down to anxiety :/ Thank you again and take care xxx

Your welcome.

I became quite ill on Sulphasalazine so I know all about that. Is there not another doctor in the practice you can see? I do feel it's important your checked out even just to be on the safe side. xx

It is worth getting it checked out - especially after you recent experiences! But a racy heart feeling can also be simple things. Are you also on stomach protectors? But hope it goes away for you, it's good to have time when you don't think about doctors...Pollyx

Hi Polly...Yes I am on Lansoprazole 30 mg everyday..I hope it goes away too as it feels horrid. How are you? Fiona xxx

Hi Fiona,

I have has palpitations for many years so I know what you mean it is a horrible feeling.

Mine have nothing to do with RA as that has come on fairly recently. I got referred to the hospital and did a treadmill test and also wore an ECG portable machine for 48 hours.

Apparently my heart does an extra little beat when it doesn't fill up properly and then the next beat my heart is really full and so it does a big beat giving me the palpitation, I don't know any of the technical terms for this I'm afraid.

Cardiologist said its nothing to worry about, I could take tablets for it but they sometimes cause more problems than the palpitations themselves, so I decided just to live with them.

What I'm trying to say us these things don't always turn out badly.

Anyway I hope all goes well for you.

Hi Fiona, I get these too! Got them at the mo, just after my eating evening meal! Started a few months ago after I increased my Sulfasalazine dose, but I'm not convinced it's connected. I always have low'ish blood pressure, so it can't be that. Makes me feel rather nauseaus! I feel rather 'fobbed off' by my GP and Rheumy (who I saw last week). I must come across to them as a neurotic hypochondriac, because there's always something new to report. Before I was diagnosed with RA, I didn't go near the GP for decades, had no cause to, but I do get the impression that they don't believe me and think I'm just making a fuss. A chest xray a few weeks ago was clear, and my blood levels are within normal limits, so maybe it is just stress? Like you, I get so fed up of never feeling 'right'!!

xx

Hi Fiona. Cardiac problems are connected with arthritic conditions such as RA and AS. I had two ops for fast heart beat. They are called ablations and are done whilst you are conscious. I feel ok now but I am on tablets to control the beat. True these irregular beats/palpitations are worrying to start with its not a sign of a heart attack more a nuisance. You can eventually control them with deep breathing exercises. Some people might beleive it is stress but more likely to do with your condition than anything else.
