Does anybody use a particular insurance company when going abroad? Although you get the standard free insurance when you book with the travel company I like to arrange my own because of the RA. Have used others in the past but thought I would ask you all what you do.
Any ideas would be grateful.

Hi Mand, Ive not used it myself however Ive arranged holiday insurance for my Mum who had breast cancer and my Uncle with terminal cancer and I found RAC to be the cheapest with the best cover for taking sick while on holiday.
They never needed to use it while out there luckily.
Are you planning on anywere nice?

ooh many have great hol. rac. if Ican ever affford to go abraod might give tthrm a look
They provide medical insurance cover for pre-existing conditions - not sure if just for Europe or Worldwide but check it out. I've found that the small print in policies can exclude you on the grounds of all kinds of previous medical incidents and medications so only go for those who guarantee to cover with all pre-existing conditions and incidents. For this reason I've found it very expensive to go to America!

Thanks for that Cece, I'll take a look at the link. Probably best to give them a call to so they can at least answer my questions directly.

It would be good to get NRAS to negoitiate on our behalf for block contract if poss? When I had active crohns colitis I discovered that the National; Association for Crohns and Colitis referrred sufferers onto a specific company which would ensure individuals with the pre existing condition.
xx Hope you get it sorted Mand

Hi Fiona, I thought the same as you and checked the NRAS website but couldn't find anything, it's certainly a good idea if someone in admin could look into it.
Hope all is well with you.

Hi there, Not sure if you and others are aware of the EHIC card (you probably all are, but not ever needing these sorts of things in the past, I only found out about it recently when trying to sort out insurance for a trip!). This will cover the equivalent of NHS treatment anywhere in Europe and is free so handy to have anyway or if you have problems getting travel insurance.
We have an annual travel insurance policy taken out before I got diagnosed, but when I contacted them they said they don't cover pre-existing conditions at all so this card was a bit of a safety net, but thankfully didn't need it!!
We have travel insurance included from our bank with our current account. I phoned them before going to Jersey (which isn't in Europe) and they said I would be covered for no extra charge. My husband has asthma and he is also covered.
I have a policy with Halifax (a family policy). It cost just £10 extra to add RA, but £40 to add Hypothyriodism (which I'd forgot to include in the past!!). I already have asthma on it. Originally the whole family was £80 for the year - which included one child with asthma & me with asthma.
The problem with the Europeon medical cards is that they don't cover you for repatriation (if you have a major accident) or prescription costs if you get delayed!! I wouldn't recommend relying on this alone myself.
You do need one which covers pre-existing conditions, otherwise if what happens is related (in any way) - they wont pay out.
H i - I now use BUPA travel insurance - you don't have to be a member of BUPA to get it. Was with another company but their premiums began to rocket and they wouldn't cover me for the USA. There is a company called Medicare in UK who provide cover for pre existing conditions for the USA and Canada. It did cost me over £400 though but worth it as I have many health problems. BuPA cover me for all my existing health problems for Europe+ I also have the medical card for Europe for basic health treatment. I have Angina, RA, Thyroid (removed), blood pressure (now stable but that doesn't count apparently), cancer in the past but no longer an issue as too long ago, and also on statins. Insurers panic about hearts if you are going to the USA/Canada/Caribbean because of the exorbitant costs the americans charge for treatment. If I want to use BUPA for the Americas or WorldWide I have to arrange separate cover with them which will cost extra but that is the same for pretty well all travel insurance policies. Worth shopping around. LavendarLady
Yes, I've used Medicare twice when going to the US - cost me over £600 but worth it as having lived in the States I know what happens when you don't have insurance - and insurers really check back years to find any way of getting out of things and any organ failure or heart problems have them running for the hills!
