Travel insurance advise

We want to travel to New York I've tried a couple of insurers but they won't cover me due to my RA. Anyone know or have used a company I can contact. Thanks

I use All Clear travel insurance. Very easy, online application form but I have also called and done it over the phone with no problems. I've never had to claim so don't know how that part would go but as long as you include everything you want to be covered for, I can't see there being any problem. Also another company I've used for my son who has psoriasis is StaySure. Hope this helps. Clemmie

I have my insurance with my bank account LLoyds TSB platinum. I advised them of my RA and they noted it and said it didn't matter!

Hi, caiflo, don't want to worry you, but I had a friend with insurance through her bank, she had been told it was ok, but when she did have a claim, they refused to cover her. You need to check with the under writers because unless it is specified you may well not be covered.

They said I was covered but I will check on Monday thank you. I am going away next Saturday and although I have been almost pain free for almost 2 years. I wouldn't want to risk not being fully covered. Thanks again x

I agree with Hatshepsut - if you read any travel insurance advice column they always advise that you thoroughly check out any travel insurance given with bank accounts or credit cards. I am over 60,have had cancer & now have RA & through a broker I got world wide annual travel insurance including USA for £199 for the year. I claimed last year & they paid out promptly with no problem. Good Luck & Bon Voyage. Kathy

I have used Staysure for European travel. My wife has back problems, years cover for 57/60 year old couple was about £150.

Look " travel insurance with ......."

Saga also were helpful and worth a try.

Hi I use Staysure and they do cover you for RA as well as all the other elements of travel insurance. I am going to Russia in June and I just called them and told them what I needed and it was done. Aviva no issues at all just declared my RA & a couple of other health issues. Have been covered for trips to the USA.

I've used staysure - declared on line medical problems, insurance not too bad a price. Never had to claim though, thankfully.

Hello, I've recently went to Canada and got my travel insurance from Barclays. It did cost me about £50 and RA was listed. To clarify, I have never been hospitalised because of RA and only take leflunomide.

I'm also going to New York and Australia later in the year and just got a years cover with Direct Line, had to phone, instead of doing it on line, but they were great.

Thanks to this thread I have just used Staysure to cover a holiday in NY for October. I first tried a company called Rock Insurance Services -whom the travel agent we are using work with - and was met by a sales assistant who put RA under heading of Arthritis. When she then asked me if I was getting any further opinions on my diagnosis or things might change I acknowledged that, in my case, this might well be so. She asked what other conditions I had or might be diagnosed with and would not accept that RA is an autoimmune disease because it isn't on her list as one - just "arthritis". She then told me she couldn't give me a policy because I had said that I suffer from several autoimmune conditions but had failed to specify which. I explained that RA and Hypothyroidism are both autoimmune conditions and she said RA is simply arthritis on her list and is not a listed autoimmune disease so she couldn't give me travel insurance!

I then read through this thread again and tried Staysure and the sales guy was excellent - asked the right questions - said if my conditions change over the year to report this to the company but otherwise I was listed as having RA and Hypothyroidism - both accepted and acknowledged as autoimmune on his list. I paid a bit more for the RA but he was very helpful and pleasant and it was all completely straightforward. He asked me where I'd heard of Staysure from and I told him about NRAS and this thread and he got my premium down a little further!

I haven't looked in for ages so this thread is probably old now but I used healthscreen247.com for single trip to USA which was cheaper than updating my annual European one. I also use American Express and phones them directly to cover RA. Fortunately never had a claim yet!
