Nosebleeds and possible damaged septum?

Morning all, diagnosed with seronegative inflammatory arthritis. Been on methotrexate a year, upped in strength few weeks ago, as was the hydroxycholquinine. Neither are working so soon to add in a biologic.I have had recurrent nosebleeds for some months, and a serious one a couple of weeks ago where an ambulance was sent due to the severity and vomiting blood. a GP suggests it may be linked to either the inflammatory arthritis or mtx.

Anyone else experienced these problems?

I don't know but that sounds frightening. Do you have hay fever? my brother used to get awful nose bleeds that went on and on. He had hay fever and even though treated the bleeds still happened. He had the blood vessels cauterised a few years ago which resolved the issue.

Thanks, it was a scary time. Typically never happens in convenient hours, it was from 9pm to 2am! No, never had hay fever, though a friends husband says his is awful with his RA. All going well the gp will cauterise in about 10 days. Hope that does the trick.

I went through a period of knowing the paramedics very well because I kept having a nose bleed for no apparent reason. ….& I was carted off to A&E….. but with a nosebleed unless you pinch the END of your nose, …fast - where all the nerves are….you will vomit blood..because you will have been swallowing it.

It.’s very unlikely to be Mtx or Hydroxy…..I have heard both blamed for a lot of things…but not nose bleeds & most GPs have very little knowledge of either drug…so don’t worry, but do pinch your nose as soon as you start bleeding & 9/10 it will stop!

I usually manage to stop them with firmly holding the correct parts of the nose and it does work - just not this time, and the blood was enabled to be swallowed, hence the ambulance concerned how much there was. Horrible arent they?It was ambulance crew that looked up mtx and said it may be a factor, and the gp I saw was from ENT and suggested it may be from the inflammatory arthritis itself, possibly vasculitis. Should know more when I see him soon. I steer away from Googling problems!

Just wondered if anyone else had similar problems.

Thank you! I seem to be getting loads of conditions and symptoms all at once... Am hoping things will begin to calm down a bit soon. ( she says crossing her fingers). One thing that is helping so much is being able to use the Wren organisation to speak with someone on a regular basis. Cannot thank them enough - such an amazing and valuable service.

I have had nosebleeds for 60 years after going through a windscreen but five years of methotrexate and hydrochloroquine have made no difference to either frequency or severity.

Oh nasty. Thats good to hear though that the meds do not alter them one way or another. Thanks. I am hoping I may get a reason for them as well as cessation.
