Asking for my husband who has Inflammatory arthritis. He's booked for the flu and covid jab at the same time. Is this OK if he's on Methotrexate? Thanks for any advice

Yes it is fine. Had both mine a few weeks ago with no problem. Not sure if your aware the British society of rheumatology, recommend holding off taking MTX for 2 weeks. It’s been found to double the number of antibodies you produce. That’s assuming he’s stable, any concern speak with his rheumatologist

Thank you so much! He is still in quite early stages so think he needs to keep taking Methotrexate . Thanks for the info though

BigPharma is pushing the 2 at the same visit, in the USA. IMO- Not good medicine - a double overload to the immune system & then you can't tell which one (if any), might result in an adverse event.

As it now recommended to withhold 2 weeks of MTX for each vaccine, having both together means omitting 2 weeks instead of 4. If you have a vaccine in each arm, you can tell which one causes local reactions.

The JCVI actually state that for the vast majority of people it is perfectly safe to have both together

For anyone with questions related to it here’s the website with info

FYI- Local swelling at the injection site is not the only possible adverse reaction.

Other possible post-vaccination adverse events include skin symptoms (itching, hives, flushing or facial swelling), breathing problems (shortness of breath, wheezing, cough), symptoms due to low blood pressure (confusion, disorientation, dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, or fast heart rate), gastrointestinal symptoms, &/or anaphylaxis...

That's NOT giving, "perfectly safe to have both together." (And what if your not in the "vast majority" for whom it is safe?)

I’m well aware of all the potential complications, I was a nurse for 34yrs. That doesn’t retract from the fact, that the JCVI have researched and reached a conclusion it’s safe. I don’t intend to be drawn into your argument, I’m basically stating the uks position on vaccinations. Nothing will ever be applicable to 100% of the population.

This is a support board; there is no intent to be argumentative.

It's all about benefits and risks. People have the right to make informed decisions. Telling people it's "perfectly safe", is inappropriate. It's less convenient, but safer, to receive the vaccinations separately. That's a fact.

I, too, am a medical professional.

hi everyone I’m on methotrexate is it ok to take multi vitamins everyday

You should be ok. Could be worth having a blood test to see which vitamins you are deficient in as you may be getting enough through your diet. People with RA are deficient in vitamin D, iron and B vitamins. So I take vitamin D3 in a spray and a vitamin B complex as a liquid as they are absorbed better in the body. 😁

I’m just researching vits and supps. due to suspected deficiency causing weight loss. It’s extremely complicated but the first opinion I’ve discovered is that multivits are not worth taking. One needs to isolate the deficiencies and take the appropriate dose in the best form ( ie not always a pill) at the right time of day. and with the right food. It appears to be about optimisation. The whole field is very complex, I know nothing and am just starting research and my answer is one of the first things I discovered. Why take any type of vit/supp until you know your condition allows your body to absorb and use that vit/supp for your benefit. I read an analogy ‘otherwise it’s just like putting money in the slot machine and cheering when three cherries pop up’. I think it will take me a while to learn what I need and to take it for optimal results. Good luck.

For me it was a mistake having both at the same time.

I had mine last week and I am on methotrexate - all fine but seems different health authorities have different ideas so best to check with your rheumy team

I spoke to my the my team and was told it’s ok to have both if you want, but your choice. Some do, some don’t. My local GP practice only offer both together so if I wanted them separately I’d have to book one or other somewhere different! Regards Mtx, depends on how you are currently. So check in with your team. My bloods and symptoms are currently under control so recommended to pause for one or two weeks.

I had both together last week without any problems ….. I inject methotrexate and a biologic drug for my rheumatoid arthritis. If any doubt I would check with his consultant .

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. The reason I was concerned was because my husband developed sero negative arthritis 6 days after a covid booster. Some googling by me found quite a few cases of inflammatory arthritis caused by the covid vaccine. The Rhumatology consultant admitted to seeing patients who had developed inflammatory arthritis after a covid vaccine, when I questioned whether the vaccine could have been the cause, but obviously could not say, yes, it caused it. Having any vaccine now, for my husband, is a great concern. I've just had mine as I have allergic bronchitis and definitely don't want Covid on top of that! Have a good day everyone

Ask your rheumatologist. I am on Rituximab and I had to have them at least one week apart. As I had posted previously I had a bad reaction to the Covid jab.

At least if you have them separately you will know the outcome of each.

Good luck

I have both at the same time. I was also advised to skip the next 2 weeks of MTX ( to get a better response) but I'm stable. Worth your husband asking his rheumatology team about that, depending on how stable he is.

My PCP wanted to give me 4 vaccines at once. I have never had a vaccine except when was little . Never had the flu pneumonia shingles or Coronavirus. I am very fortunate. I had a reaction to an antibiotic in 1991 was hospitalized for 5 days also had reactions to several other medicines so I am scared to get any vaccines and am very careful about protecting myself. I also take many supplements to keep my immune system built up. Good luck with your decision . I would take 1 at a time.
