Guided injections

Luludean profile image

Next week I will have guided injections in both feet. Only info I have is that I won’t be able to drive. I asked the orthopaedic consultant ( injections are done in ultrasound ) if I should stop Apixaban the day before. He said he not been asked that before. I had to stop it when I had steroid injections in facet joint and trigger points . Of course I googled nhs guidelines . One said stop , another said don’t stop. Advice please? Louise

The only person to give advice would be your rheumatologist to your surgeon. Suggest you ring your surgeon’s secretary and ask her to contact your rheumatologist to get clarification. This isn’t something you should have to do yourself but sometimes needs must………you could also contact your rheumatologist if that’s possible for you but we can’t advise and shouldn’t. Best of luck with the injections and hope they help.

I’d get done one at a time. And in my case I carried on with Etanercept and Azathyoprine but you might get different instructions so contact the clinic doing the injections. I’ve only ever had one foot done and it’s never been a problem but you should stay off it for a day or so.

Hi Medway lady. The 2 drugs you mentionned are, I think from Rheumatology? I was worried about having a bleed , Apixaban , prevents clotting . I have no rheumatology drugs now. Thanks fir your reply. L

I'm on Riveroxaban and it's no issue. Thats same only 1 pill a day. Neither actually prevent clotting but inhibit prostaglandin. If we didn't clot we would bleed to death. From Haematologist six years ago after PE's and DVT so now lifelong. If in doubt ring them but you can always delay one dose.

Hi again Medway lady. I was on Rivaraxaban now on Apixaban twice a day and Digoxin and Losartan , all for life. Mitral valve repsir and persistent AF. I have now been told to stop Apixaban .

I hope it goes well, I had steriod last year last year but only left foot. It did burn the next day but stopped the pain for nearly a year and I’m due another soon.

Now that IS more reassuring Medway Lady!! I had spinsl sterpid epidural, facet joint and trigger point injections all together 4 months ago . That was a challenge but some sedation helped . And the Pain clinic and cardio team were there !!

Now to show appreciation I’m walking / slowly for BHF. Lordy feet hurt.

I agree with you….unless you have somebody at your beck & call to carry you or push your wheelchair…both feet together is a No!No!

Hi Aged Crone , I was given no option . It is both . I also live alone . I have 4 children , youngest one 37, but they live miles away . Letter from ultrasound department says «  some discomfort ». I know I will have to get a taxi . Louise

Actually I have just read your post again. You’re only having US guided injections… you’re not having surgery .l.so I don’t think that will be a problem . When I had an ultrasound guided procedure they were removing neuromas so I had stitches & it wasn’t just the injections. I think you’ll just need to be careful for a day or two.

Good luck….hope the injections are successful.

Aged Crone. Phew , just shows how posts can be terrifying !!!!

Thank you for rereading ,

I’ll have to walk to the taxi anyway . L

I had both feet done with steroid injections into the last joint on the big toe. I just took it easy for a few days, it wasn't a problem. I planned meals in advance and had lots of reading material ready.

I wasn't supposed to drive home. But the volunteer driver didn't show up, so I drove myself to hospital (very local cottage hospital) and figured I would leave the car there overnight and catch a ride home with one of the three members of staff living in our village. None were on duty! No taxis available as they were all doing the school run.

I couldn't actually tell you that I drove myself home straight away before the injections started to work with no problems because that would be wrong to do! 😉

Uhm , Cybernarn , intriguing !! You kept your sense of humour though?

Apixaban doesn't usually need stopping for injections. As someone has already pointed out, it's not a RA drug, it reduces the risk of clotting. Make sure that the person injecting is aware you are on it, so that suitable pressure can be made after the injection to prevent bruising as far as possible.

Yes oldtimer , I do know what my drugs are for . I have got through to cardiology and rheumatology and I will stop the Apixaban . Thank you for your message.

Sorry, that bit of the thread was for people who were assuming it was a RA drug, not directed at you, as I'm sure you are perfectly aware which is for what. I have had contrary advice myself and told not to stop, but, of course, everyone is an individual with different health problems.

note my diagnosis is Stills disease which for me manifests as RA. Diagnosis made in 1979 when I was 17, now 62. Joint damage has meant foot pain for years and I’m having my first US guided steroid injection tomorrow. I’m serious drug free thankfully but they haven’t enquired about any meds at all. The leaflet warns post menopausal woman may experience spotting, no driving home and test 48 hours post procedure. I’m hoping I’ll be able to walk without pain.

I will be so interested to hear how you get on Stills. Are you having both feet done? I hope it goes smoothly and not too much pain . Rest and be pampered afterwards. Louise

Just one although both cause pain, I’ll push for the other if this is successful, I’ll let you know.

Sorry Stills , you are not having feet done. Where are you having this injection, I have had them several times , back , facet jount etc , all went well. Inspite of all your ailments you are drug free??? That is iimpressive. All the best. L

Hi, I am pleased to report it was quick and easy with a slight sting at the injection. I didn’t feel much numbness afterwards (it was at 1530 Friday) and not much pain by bed time at 2300 so all well so far. Thanks for asking and I’ll update you tomorrow too. When is yours?

Luludean in reply toStills

So glad to hear this Stills. Well done!!Super brave!!

So you could walk afterwards? Made me less scared!!

Mine Friday. Chilly morning here. L

Stills profile image
Stills in reply toLuludean

Yes I was able to walk normally in my comfy (old lady shoes), I did keep the foot elevated during the evening and this morning it is a bit stiff and achey as forewarned in the leaflet and my RA pain is slightly increased but nothing drastic . I actually felt as I’ve I could have driven but medical advice is NOT to and I believe one’s insurance is invalidated if driving under those circumstances and why take risks. So all in all it was fine snd you will be too.

Let me know how it goes Friday 😀
