Hydrotherapy pool?

Hi. I'm lucky enough to be going on a cruise, as I can't fly now as it causes too much pain, and there is a hydrotherapy pool which I can pay for. Do any of you have any opinions after using this type of pool? I'm thinking of using it the day after travelling to the ship. I have RA and osteoarthritis and back problems. X

You lucky thing!! The only thing that really helps me is the warm water and the gentle exercises that I've been given

Hi enjoy I'd deffenetly use it

So much demand for this back home

It can be so beneficial for lots

I had 6 weeks with physio from rumatologist at Hydrotherapy really liked the Hydrotherapy

And chronic course had add ons for Hydrotherapy as well waiting lists,

I'd go daily if you can

I'd only do 20 mins first day if you go more work upto 40 mins as days go by

I'd just walk in water first day gentle moves etc if swim very slow take it easy

Afterwards can feel heavy maybe sore a little bit for a wee while not long

With short stays does stop this though

Enjoy holiday and the Hydrotherapy

It's £49 for 2 hours so daily is out. After what Medway said I'm not going to do it. Possibly wouldn't be as clean on a ship as in an NHS pool.

That's not cheap Yeh you don't want any hiccups on holiday

Enjoy holiday

If ever offered on nhs I'd maybe consider

I love hydrotherapy and have done many sessions over the years via the hospital physio or joining a private aqua club who uses a school hydro pool. It can make you feel very tired after it if exercising, or just being in the warmer water, but it’s so easy to move in it when your joints are supported by water. I got really fit and improved muscle tone. It’s whatever you want to do .. float and relax or do some pool exercises. Try it and see! Enjoy.

I don't know anything about hydrotherapy but when I went on a cruise, I decided to try out the pool (I was at my worse state of disability then). I got in but found I couldn't swim anymore and also couldn't get back out again. Fortunately the beefy lifeguard gave me a good humoured hand. That day I felt I'd aged 30 years!

Aw gottarelax I know that one! I can't swim now either which I hate. I wasn't very good at it but enjoyed the feeling of weightlessness just floating on my back up and down the pool. I just get in, if there are steps into it, and cool down and sit basically. I can doggy paddle a bit still though with my feet.

Fortunately, things have improved enough for me to swim and get out with out help. I love being in water. I still can’t do baths though.

No I can't do baths either. We only have a walk in shower now as I couldn't get out of the bath once so that was it we got rid. Now and gain hubby would book a hotel for the night with a bath as a treat and help me in and out but not anymore he couldn't do it anymore. I miss a bath.

Don’t do it! It’s human soup as my consultant urologist said. I got ecoli from one. He said LA pools are tested but cruise ships who knows. The last cruise I went on there was a sign saying “do not use if immune suppressed”. I know how hard it was to treat the ecoli as most varieties are antibiotic resistant these days. At the same time I got MRSA in the lungs and this was a seriously expensive ship. So be warned, yes it might be lovely or it could leave you with dreadful bugs that really do make you very ill indeed. I’d never set foot in one ever again.

Thank you for this Medway! After reading your comment I won't do it. I've had 4 holidays in the past 2 years where after flying I've been in agony and had to visit doctors more than once each time and I want this cruise to be hopefully better and more relaxing. I really don't want to chance the hydrotherapy pool after what you have said. Thanks again. X

Trouble is that it only takes one selfish person to pee in it. I had the worst chest infection you can imagine. I never imagined the human nose could produce the amount of gunk it did. I could not speak for coughing for ages and the green gunk was truly alarming. The local A&E sent me for testing in a glass box and found the pneumonia caused by MRSA. Thank goodness they did as I took antibiotics for months. The consultant said it was actually common but if like me on RA meds it really was much worse and harder to treat. So as he said if you want to use a pool again go to the local council one. It might pong a bit but it’s tested properly. Oddly enough this started in 2014 and today I saw the Urology consultant again. Only my yearly check up as I take Hiprex to prevent any more infection as the Ecoli has never gone completely. It doesn’t do much harm anymore but of course it can go higher. I’m going for a special type of contrast ct with hydration in a couple of weeks as he is concerned about blood in urine. I’m fine but wish I’d never seen a hot tub. My friend has one I’ve never used it but she understands. lol

Oh I recall someone else saying about pseudomonas and a hydro pool, now I think back. Also the physio told us to never go in any hot tubs if we saw them in gyms/spas as said germs could more easily percolate in there. I don’t like hot tubs, anyhow. Was it you, Medway? The pools my physio used to take us to were exceptionally clean. He’d have complained loudly if not! One was at a private school the hospital paid to use and the other was the main hospital’s own pool which was immaculate.

I never thought of those risks 😱. Thank you for pointing them out.

No not me as I’ve never heard of pseudo etc. But I remember posting about bugs in cruise ship hot tubs. I was on the Celebrity Eclipse when I took my dip and I think lucky to be able to tell the tale. I was told same as you, council or hospital are good as tested but ones you don’t know about avoid. We were on Celebrity Eclipse again as it is beautiful ship that’s when I saw the sign not to use if immune compromised. It might have changed again by now but even in Cypress and France I don’t use hot tubs and avoid pools only sea swimming. I think it might be that the hot tubs have a lot of vapour that we breathe in too. But I don’t actually know.

Hi Medway, that’s awful what happened re your EColi and MRSA infections and I now recall that. 😢 I have only been in a hot tub 30 years ago and wasn’t keen and a rather silly man who fancied his chances got in opposite me in the hot tub of my new health club, stretched his leg out onto my thigh and started to move it up. Ugh. I smacked the water hard, drenched his face, leapt out dripping wet into reception and reported him. He was told to leave the club immediately and given a refund.

The three hydro pools I used via my hospital physiotherapist over the years were very keen on their hygiene. I remember now I was told the bubbles in hot tubs cause aerosols in them which spread the germs in to the surrounding atmosphere, so yes you’ve said the same as my friend re the vapour. The hydro pools were chlorinated and levels checked as we could see the pool staff doing that and recording it on wall charts.

It was very wise re your luxury cruise ship’s safety notice to the immunocompromised though. I hope all goes well for your CT too.🩷 Hope you’re enjoying your garden. I’m sitting with the bees and butterflies in our main patio/pot area. Glorious scent and colours and a lovely breeze. My latest addition is a soft grape coloured hibiscus tree shrub which seems to be popular with the bees! x

Thank you it’s astonishingly booked for Tuesday next week. But it’s all day, in at 9am they start infusing water then ct with contrast at 2 then back to infusion for water till 6pm. The lady said bring a lot of snacks! No problem there but it has to be done because my kidneys are bleeding a bit. I think it’s related to Etanercept and have a diary with photo of the relationship between injections and blood. I stress it probably looks a lot worse than it is and it does’nt hurt but they need to see inside and it may change how a medication is prescibed for people with CKD. It’s better than another medical procedure and general anaesthetic. Your right, in the right place the pools are well looked after and safe but cruise ships or other places where it’s not so important it’s a risk. Up to the individual to judge how they feel but the pong of chlorine is usually a good give away to me. You new plant sounds lovely. I’ve given my husband a choice I’ve made a few pounds of shortcrust pastry for the freezer for mince pies and left a pound in fridge. So does he fancy quiche or lemon meringue pie? He’s still considering ! lol xxx

Ps you should have kicked that bloke or worse just laughed at him too. That always makes those types run. I used to get the shouted ” I want to speak to the bloke in charge” when a debtor tried to bully me, my response with humour which always got a reaction of shock was “ your speaking to her and I bet you wish you’d not been so aggressive”. Such is life xxx

Was going to say your med can make you shed more red cells as I was told this by the urologist I saw around 2015-17 as he said some of the RA meds can do this with microscopic haematuria, and also by having RA it can make you shed more. Even if so it’s best to check though with having kidney issues, and yes, plenty of snacks! Big magazine or podcasts. A

Both quiche and lemon meringue pie sound wonderful. 😍 I’d probably go for savoury though.

That bloke actually thought it was some sort of pickup I should like, trying to touch my thigh. Yes I should have “tapped him” with my foot .. resulting in him doubling up and taking two octaves higher as he hobbled off! 😆It was some jerk who fancied himself and not typical of guys who went there.

I have never had a hibiscus before so need to read up more on what to do.

Your reply to the rude guy was excellent. 😆 I hope he felt squashed! xxx

If it’s a communal pool I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

Would you take a bath with strangers.. …Yuk!

I used to love using our hydropool at the local leisure centre which also had a resistance machine for extra workout. Don't have enough kick in my legs to use the main pool. The management at the centre then decided to close it !!!!!!!

Hydrotherapy pools are great under normal circumstances. Don't think I'd use one on a cruise ship though. Might be less than hygienic! Have a great holiday.

My physio sent me to our NHS hydrotherapy pool. It was wonderful. I went from shrivelled and bent over, barely able to walk, to standing virtually straight and being able to walk, although still using a stick and have to stop and if any garden walls around, sit on them. I just wish I could continue. The physios are brilliant. Enjoy.

Me too I got very fit and toned and felt full of energy. They closed my local one for refurb a couple of years ago.

Hi I have used hydrotherapy pool in the past. I found the heat helped my joints and I was able to exercise safely. Just don’t overdo the exercise. I also had a hot tub, when I was first diagnosed with RA, although it was difficult to get in and out even with assistance , I could enjoy the time and relax relatively pain free.

Enjoy your cruise 🚢
