Having watched the session on inflammation and diet I have started on Olive Oil 10mls daily. Advice on Google about what dose to take varies a lot.Does anyone take it and how much?

I have to say I do not love olives or olive oil, I use it to cook but I could never dip bread into it like you see in some restaurants.

Anyway, my hairdresser is from Sicily and he swears by a tablespoon of Sicilian olive oil every day - says it is the only olive oil to drink. You can use it to dress salads etc.

I think he said it is best because of the climate and because the olive trees grow on volcanic soil which is why it is so good for you - much better than stuff from olives grown elsewhere. He has promised that when he gets his next batch he will let me taste it. Can’t say I’m keen to be honest. I found this site strazzantisicilyexperiences...

If you Google Sicilian olive oil you will see all sorts of suppliers.

Good luck with it - let us know how it goes.

Thank you. I have an expensive one which is high in polyphenols as recommended. I don't like the taste either, but a drop of lemon juice helps. Will give it 3 months and report back

Fruitandnutcase in reply tovonniesims

Polyphenols - that’s what he said his Sicilian one is high in. When we used to go to Jamie’s Italian they always brought you a dish of olive oil and out some balsamic vinegar into it - I used to ask for the balsamic on its own and they were always ok about that so the lemon juice in it is probably similar to the balsamic they put in their olive oil 😊

If you read the info bkurb about WHICH olive oil works the magic…you would likely need a Mortgage to buy it. It is not the £5/10 a bottle we all buy in M&S,but the real high end stuff around £50,

vonniesims profile image
vonniesims in reply toAgedCrone

£26.90 for 500 mls, but only taking 10mls a day

Pour it on sliced large tomatoes with fresh basil leaves and a pinch of salt, then mop the juice with decent bread. After a while you may not need the tomatoes!

WillowsMother profile image
WillowsMother in reply toFluffontoast

OMG, you have me salivating - That’s my absolute favourite starter! Especially with sourdough and smoked sea salt! Only one downside is that tomatoes aren't great for inflammation, which kind of defeats the purpose of trying to eat olive oil every day. Shame... 🙈

That's interesting, I mostly hear that tomatoes are good for inflammation. Maybe I should look into this a bit more..

Many years ago I lived for a year in the South of France. I noticed many elderly gentlemen would sit outside the cafés in the late morning and drink a large spoonful of olive oil followed by a glass of Pastis! Presumably the former was to “oil the joints” and the latter was to take away the taste of the oil. Then they would play pétanque, rather well!

(Pastis is like Ricard or Ouzo.)

Olive oil coats the stomach and throat. Older people often have sensitive throats and stomach ulcers. This way they can still swallow their pastis without any 'burn' (the pastis acts as a mild pain killer for their aches and pains). They don't drink olive oil because it is good for them, it merely allows them to consume the strong alcohol!

Ah that's very interesting!

I take a tablespoon each day. I used Consumerlabs.com to research which olive oil is considered highly recommended.

Interesting website but I noticed most of the olive oils I could see were American - my Sicilian hairdresser would not be impressed - the olives have got to be grown on volcanic slopes for him 😉

Be interesting to hear how you feel after 3 months. Is it best to take it on its own first thing in the morning? 🤞

Don't think it matters. It seems some people take it at night

Ghee, olive oil and coconut oil are the three recommended oils now. Full fat dairy, butter and cream are Ok too (in moderation). What is not OK are vegetable seed oils or highly processed oils incl. margarine and 'spreads'.

I had an ulcer for many years and all the prescribed medicines made me feel bad. I asked my doctor about drinking milk and she said yes, but use semi-skimmed milk. I tried it with no success and I continued to have stomach problems for many years. Then I read that the new scientific thinking (!) was that full cream milk (whole fat milk) is actually not that bad after all. So I drank a glass of full cream milk whenever my stomach felt tender. My stomach problems disappeared within 6 months and never came back! Due, I think, to the fat in the milk coating and protecting my stomach.

That’s interesting. I have a friend who always chooses those ‘healthy’ Flora type spreads if we are ever out and she has a scone or a toasted tea cake . I always go for real butter - at home I have grass fed butter.

I can never understand why she thinks something filled with chemicals is preferable to butter. I find it interesting because she is a scientist and is very health conscious and fussy about what she eats and the surfaces of cooking utensils etc. well just about everything where food is concerned. I never been tempted to ask her why though, it just seems strange to me.

Many years ago doctors told us to eat vegetable oils and margarine because they were low in cholesterol. Also the food companies could made a ton of money. Now they have realised that eating pure cholesterol (e.g. ghee) actually is not bad for you but processed vegetable oils are! 'cholesterol' in your blood is not necessarily a bad sign of heart disease, etc.

Now they say, olive oil, coconut oil and ghee are the best things to cook with and to avoid processed/hydrogenated fats and oils which are now thought to harm our circulatory system (the chemical structure of hydrogenated oil is 1 step away from plastic). Also, statins for 99% of people are now deemed not necessary and have harmful side effects.

You basically cannot rely on any 'scientific' food papers, especially if sponsored by food companies. It's like tobacco firms telling us smoking is good for you! Similarly, drug companies do not produce accurate and reliable scientific papers. They preach to the doctors about their 'evidence' and the doctors preach to us and dish out their expensive drugs.

Processed foods (inc processed oils/spreads), sugar substitutes and sugar are the three best things to omit from your daily diet.

Olive oil is the only type of oil I use. It needs to be Extra Virgin Olive oil and Organic. There are two possible reasons why using Olive Oil might be of benefit.

1. By using olive oil as a total replacement for all other edible oils (especially seed oils, maize, rapeseed, soy, peanut, etc.).

2. By consuming olive oil as a 'medicine' because it has curative properties.

I firmly believe that reason 1 is the main benefit. Olive oil is relatively harmless and may be slightly beneficial, but the highly processed seed oils that you are still consuming are harmful. Esp. as these oils are often high in pesticides and insecticides.

The Mediterranean diet used to be healthy, because it consisted of pure, fresh, organically grown, locally produced food (note the phrase 'used to' - these days the same foods are full of chemicals, are never fresh as they could be in cold storage for months and are artificially ripened, etc., and many sadly lack flavour as they have never even dipped their roots in soil).

Also, so much cheap olive oil these days is adulterated. It is often mixed with cheap seed oil and is highly processed (which is why I prefer extra virgin unfiltered olive oil). The taste of non-virgin olive oil is often bitter due to the way the oil is extracted (skins and bitter stones are macerated with the flesh and then the oil is extracted under high temperature and pressure to get out as much of the oil as possible). Cold mechanical first pressing extra virgin oil is by far the best.

So instead of drinking additional olive oil, simply use it to replace all of the other poisonous oils that you are currently using.

Good extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil is (was) delicious when consumed with nothing more than just fresh bread. Sadly, it is very difficult to find any olive oil these days that can be eaten in this way, even in Greece or Spain.

I've stopped buying my fruit and veg in supermarkets and now have a weekly order and delivery of organic produce from Riverford Organics. The difference in taste/flavour of their products is very noticeable and everything stays fresh so much longer than organic products from the supermarkets. I agree about olive oil too and organic EV quality is most definitely the best for use in salad dressings or dipping bread into and I try to buy Italian brands if I can.

I have heard that it should be extra pure virgin olive oil. What brand are you using? Nothing has ever helped my stomach since childhood. And then they took out my gallbladder and all h*ll broke out. Recently (about two years ago) I started taking duloxitine for my peripheral neuropathy and as a side benefit, it helps my stomach a lot but not 100%.

The one I have is called November. I haven't noticed any effectcs from taking it, but I think I need to take more

As a child, they had me on an oil based medication called Petrolager. It looked and smelled like marshmallows but didn’t taste anything like one. It made me gag and never helped me. But the premise that oil will help seems to be the common denominator. Good luck with the olive oil it does have medicinal benefits. Hope it helps.

I come from a Mediterranean background grew up with olive oil in my diet, was eating it back in the 1950s when impossible to get it in this country. My mum was advised to go toe chemist where only a small bottle available cos only used for earaches lol. So my mum had to bring it back from when she visited family abroad. Love how when various immigrants arrived in the 1960s these foods arrived too.

Let us know how you get on? 😊

Hi, I just use it in all my cooking, as I used to live in Spain, the Mediterranean diet is the healthiest, so I guess a spoonful's measure daily.

You are missing the point. It is not that olive oil is (particularly) good for you, it is that other processed oils and spreads (e.g. seed oils like rapeseed/canola, maize, peanut, soy, etc.) are bad for you. The (older) Mediterranean people had low heart disease and they lived longer because they did not eat processed foods and processed seed oils. They ate olive oil, animal fat and butter INSTEAD of other seed/vegetable oils.

Consider this hypothetical case: A large study finds that people who only vape don't get lung cancer or heart disease. So all the heavy smokers start to also vape for an extra 10 minutes a day but still smoke 40 cigarettes a day and think that they won't get lung cancer or heart disease!

I did not notice any difference. Have stopped taking it orally as I think I should have been taking at least 2 tblsn daily and got worried about the weight implications. Am using it on food quite a lot. It is difficult to work out how much we would need to take.
