What happens if you take the oil whilst on warfarin, what effect does it have?

It might be best to talk to your pharmacist and doctor before starting anything new. Natural or not. There can be serious consequences

I agree talk with pharmacist or doctor as it may interact with other medication you are taking and cause more problems

Nearly 60 percent of the medications on the market are metabolized through a set of liver enzymes — called cytochrome P450, or CYP450 — that are, coincidentally, the same enzymes that break down CBD. Previous research suggests that CBD is a very strong inhibitor of the CYP450 enzymes. This means that if you take CBD while on another medication, it could block these critical enzymes, allowing more of the medication to get into your system.

“So, let’s say you’re on a medication like warfarin or Coumadin, a really common medication we give to a lot of patients to thin their blood,” Henry said. “If [CBD] is blocking the metabolism of warfarin, that warfarin is now higher and more active and can either become toxic or cause other problems.” In the case of a blood thinner like warfarin, “other problems” could entail a traumatic bleed or a dangerous hemorrhage, she added. huffpost.com/entry/cbd-medi...

Really, please do talk to the prescriber of your warfarin Hidden , any other meds you're prescribed too, we don't always know, there could be interactions that could cause real problems. Natural doesn’t necessarily mean safe.

I am glad that you posted this reply nomoteheels as my mother used CBD oil and was on warfarin.

They increased her dosage of warfarin and she neglected to inform her GP about cbd meds and other health shop pills.

The result was a massive haemorrhage of the brain as written on her death certificate.

I'm so sorry to hear this Minty. A lesson hard learnt I'm afraid, though that sounds uncaring it really isn’t meant that way, I mean if only she'd told or asked her GP or better still read up on it & understood she'd not to take the CBD & the other health shop pills. We say it often but it's worth saying again, natural doesn’t necessarily mean safe, especially so when taking prescribed meds.

It was a few years ago now and I could never understand why she never shared with her GP, you just cannot tell some people who choose to self medicate

I am so happy that you have explained this to others

Thank you. It must play on your mind, it would mine.

I am over it now. I did think about posting the coroner’s report to warn other people of the dangers, it seems if people read something is ok on google or Facebook then it must be ok. I only take what is prescribed and then I still question why. Fortunately as many of the members know on here my new partner is a consultant and she tells me people die all the time from self medicating with prescription meds and others, then blame the hospital or doctor.

Her motto is Every pill that you take causes an action and has a reaction, something like that.

A really interesting article and well worth reading in full, thank you nomoreheels

Isn't it? It really does concern me people taking things without knowledge of their prescriber. I thought the article was particularly pertinent especially with CBD products being so freely available, interest here & the question being raised.

Levels of warfarin can be increased (with all the associated risks) in people taking cannabis. It will mean that your very carefully monitored dose of warfarin could have unexpected effects. I really would not chance it ....
