Sometimes sadly I don't think they work but it was only the other day so perhaps a few more days might give it time to do something. But if it was me and in a weeks time I was still in pain I'd call my RA team for advice. A few years ago I had one not work and it was repeated that did work ! Mine was done because my ankle inflamed and was so painful. x

I've had them that don't work ..but this is my first one in 8 years ..so can't remember..yesterday wasn't too bad ..but I have a statin every other day and I took one last night now I'm in pain again ..I'm trying to work out if the statin is causing it or the steroid not working

Just time will tell, if it's in one joint I'd try ice and elevation. If all over then call your RA team if it doesn't improve tomorrow. I'm sorry no idea about statins, my cholesterol is good. About the only bit that is.lol

I know my it can be a pre disposed condition. I’m sure it’s not diet as my husband has it and we eat the same but mine is usually low.

I couldn't take statins because of the pain it caused in my joints. Hopebyou feel better soon xx

I'm the same. My GP said 'they are literally killing you'! Wasting my muscles away. I'm on fibrates now instead.

Trishfrog1 profile image
Trishfrog1 in reply to Haz58

What are Fibrates

Haz58 profile image
Haz58 in reply to Trishfrog1

Fibrates up the good cholesterol to counteract the bad cholesterol. I have either bezaflip or Bezafibrate dependant on which the chemist have in each month.

Daddyishealing profile image
Daddyishealing in reply to Haz58

Who put you on this and as a treatment for what. Is this a choletrol drug like lipitor

Haz58 profile image
Haz58 in reply to Daddyishealing

My GP years ago. Its for cholesterol. I tried statins but they made me hurt so much in my body. The gp did a blood test and said they were wasting all my muscles. Lipitor lowers the bad cholesterol (statin) whereas Fibrates raise the good cholesterol to counteract the bad.

I might mention these when I speak to the Dr at hospital who put me on statins .Thank You.

Daddyishealing profile image
Daddyishealing in reply to Haz58

Wait can you explain that and the med you are taking. I'm coming off of dexamethasone but it's been three months and have me ability to move. I know it's hafuk to bones and skin are you saying that steroids cause muscle wasting and what else have you tried . Tnf inhibitors are more dangerous or the chemo drugs so im not sure what you want by this and want to know how severe your damage is and can you walk .

Haz58 profile image
Haz58 in reply to Daddyishealing

Non fibrates are for cholesterol not RA. I'm on sulfasalazine and Etanercept benepali injections for RA. Trushfrig1 asked if statins could cause pain or interfere with steroid injections earlier.

Trishfrog1 profile image
Trishfrog1 in reply to Daddyishealing

Rosuvastatin for cholesterol

unlikely to be statins as you have been taking them for a while. Did you rest after the injection?

Some people have a steroid flare after the injection so it is worse before it is better. Wait another 48 hours.

Trishfrog1 profile image
Trishfrog1 in reply to helixhelix

I only have the statin every other day onkyvbeen on them nearly 3 weeks one every other day .Yes I've not done anything since 9 am Monday after the injection I've really rested to the point I've been so bored lol .

Took it Sunday evening said to hubby my joints are ok ..was having doubts about having it .

Woke up the following morning to go have the steroid injection I was in agony again ...wasn't too bad yesterday then took one last night and bam just like I was Monday morning ...feel like I'm going round in circles.

helixhelix profile image
helixhelix in reply to Trishfrog1

If yiu have inly been on statins a few weeks then maybe they are a problem?!

Trishfrog1 profile image
Trishfrog1 in reply to helixhelix

Yes, the first statins I was given made me very uncomfortable. It could be them

Why are you getting an injection instead of taking dexamethasone by mouth which is the strongest longest lasting. I only know about steroid shots in joint

every time I have had one they have worked in minutes to be honest good luck hope you feel better soon

It takes about 5 days for the Kenolog / cortizone shot to begin working . Did you get the 40 mg or the big one the 80 mg ?

The 80 mg broke my Lupus flare up that I had had for 4 months for which I was very glad .

Hi I don't know I'll have a look see if I can see it on my notes

It happens, sometimes they just don’t seem to work…

I hope you get relief soon.

A possible cause. Did you buy any chance do much walking, despite being in pain. Sometimes they just don't work but I do know that flexing that muscle by walking can push the injection out. So instead of being slow release it is all or nothing. As I say, though, it does seem to happen that a depo is not as effective.

Trishfrog1 profile image
Trishfrog1 in reply to RAGuy

No walked to the car park and straight home did nothing for 48hrs ...

RAGuy profile image
RAGuy in reply to Trishfrog1

Oh well, just a thought. Then it looks like one of those times it doesn't work. I hope the next one is effective and meantime keep positive and I wish you well

Daddyishealing in reply to Trishfrog1

This doesn't mean you will. If you use the same drug that you've had injected in the past if you didn't have those side effects likely you won't either . Which drug bc if it's Kenalog it did t work at all either loe dose Dex did and when I ate out of control I gained with them I stopped doing that and im 6 foot 4 110 lbs three months of dexamethasone

Otto11 profile image

Hi when I was first diagnosed you used to get one after every clinic appointment. They stopped being effective so I stopped bothering. If I remember they worked pretty much straightaway. I do hope you get some relief soon x

There are two commonly used steroids injected there. One works for me and the other doesn't. Sorry can't remember names and it may be different for you

Trishfrog1 profile image

I don't know which one it was

So prednisolone doesn't work for me and kenalog does work for me

The first Pred injection I had was amazing and worked within 24 hours. I’ve had two more since then and unfortunately they have been less effective each time. In fact the last one was barely noticeable. Hope you feel better soon x

Had an RA Flare up in December and the Hospital gave me a Steroid Jab, a lot of swelling went away but had considerable pain in my right arm so contacted the Hospital again and the gave me another Steroid Jab in January, beginning of Feb I contacted them again and said the pain in my arm was unbearable had not slept properly since November what can they do, they told me nothing as my Bloods showed no inflammation so was not my RA.

To cut a long story short I had started Statins in December and they turned out to be the cause, stopped taking 3 weeks ago and getting better by the day however probably be a couple of months before back to normal.

I've been in a long journey for about 10mths ..and I've put it all down to statins I've been on and off them for 10mths my cholesterol is high..not diet related...but I've not been right since been on and off them ...terrible upper right back pain..ended up with CT scan ..which found a collapse of the transverse colon and and engorgment..so had colonoscopy everything normal ...at the same time took my self of mtx as it was making me feel I'll after 14 years ..no more upper back pain..for 3mths started on sulfasalazine 5 weeks in wbc at 1 had to come of them because of really bad side effects also started with the upper back pain it's so bad one time I got it they sent ambulance 111 ...honestly I'm going round in circles the upper back pain well like really bad period pain but last up to 8 hours then goes 🤷‍♀️ then it goes for weeks .These statins I've been on for 3wks one every other day due to take one tonight but I'm going to give them a miss for a few days ..Honestly I'm fed up with it all

The one time I had one that didn’t work I discovered it was the lower dose . Only 80mg works for me . I’d give it a couple more days and call them up if no improvement.
