Shoulder strength

Hi all,Does anyone have some recommendations of exercises they've done to build shoulder strength to support their joints?

The nurse has given me some but I'd love to hear from people who've actually done them and found they've worked.

I guess I need some reassurance and positive stories before getting started too.

Thanks a lot.

Believe in your nurse rather than strangers on the internet who don’t know you or what’s causing your pain. You can self refer for physio if you think that would give you more confidence in what you’re doing. My shoulder exercises worked to some extent with the pain but in the end I had an op but what I had is probably different to you so give them a try as you won’t know if they help unless you do 🤞🏻

Totally agree with KittyJ. CentraL_perk you need to at least try the exercises the nurse has given you. What suits others might not be right for you. If you don’t trust the nurse you could ask to be referred to a physiotherapist. Ajay’s exercises sound pretty classic exercises but again you need an exercise program tailored to suit you. Something that suits a 38 year old woman won’t necessarily suit a 74 year old woman like me or even a younger man and it all depends on why you are needing to do the exercises.

I also so agree with KittyJ….NEVER start doing any exercises described by a no doubt well meaning person on here…you could end up far worse than you are now.

I think the important thing is to make sure you actually continue to do the exercises as instructed. Then follow up with the nurse or whoever gave you the exercises to see if they have a follow on plan for more to continue. Don't expect an instant fix, stick with it. If they are not working contact the nurse for further guidance. Good luck!

versus arthritis has a huge series of exercises on YouTube, there are some specifically for shoulders and also for after surgery. They are worth checking out and watching a few to see if would suit, if you are unsure check with the rheumy nurse as well .

I've found swimming to be the best. I've had several steroids into shoulders which failed. I have a lot of damage. Swimming was painful to begin with, but I really notice difference in both movement and pain. Same with spine, knees and hips etc. I hate the dressing/undressing but such a relief once in pool.

Good advice above, a simple shoulder exercise is the walk up the wall with your finger tips. Having had three broken shoulder incidents I found the hardest ones to do were the behind the back ones, even just holding your arm out side ways and lifting helps. As your shoulder is a multi movement joint best to do the exercises as they are given to you , as some problems require more complex exercises when the others have helped you gain muscle strength. I actually went to an exercise class with physio supervision while my shoulder was broken. Best tip I can give is little and often to build strong muscles.Good luck

I managed to get an appointment with a physio after I had a particularly painful, weak lder x-rayed. The x-ray showed not issues with the shoulder joint which was reassuring. I was given exercises to strengthen muscles, tendons round the joint. They did help but after Covid I'm in a flare causing every where including the shoulder, pain. I will restart again using paracetamol to help me cope.

I follow Dr Jo on YouTube and I find her to be brilliant. I did her 10 day challenge on repeat over lockdown and she helped my fitness in every way. Her shoulder exercises are excellent
